“When We Speak: Sex, Power and the #MeToo Movement”

This is the opening session of William Paterson University's seventh annual multidisciplinary "Contexts" conference hosted by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The conference this year is entitled "When We Speak: Sex, Power, and the #MeToo Movement," and altogether traces the global histories of structurally unequal gender relationships, reports on the current state of the #metoo movement, and looks toward ways of creating lasting cultural change.

This first speaker session of the conference -- the first of three -- is entitled "Looking Back: Histories of Sexual Violence," and features presentations by Dr. Greta LaFleur, assistant professor of American studies at Yale University, and author of "The Natural History of Sexuality: Race, Environmentalism, and the Human Sciences in British Colonial North America," and Dr. Durba Mitra, assistant professor of studies of women, gender, and sexuality at Harvard University, and Carol K. Pforzheimer assistant professor at the Radcliffe Institute.

Dr. LaFleur's presentation is entitled "How to Think about the History of the #MeToo Era." Dr. Mitra's presentation is entitled "Sexual Violence and the 'Outrage on Modesty': A View from the Global South."

This keynote speaker session -- the second of three speaker sessions in the conference -- features Dr. Julianne Malveaux, labor economist and noted media writer and commentator, former president of Bennett College for Women, and former professor at numerous institutions, including the New School for Social Research, San Francisco State University, and Michigan State University.

Dr. Malveaux's presentation is entitled "Race, Power, and #MeToo."

This final speaker session of the conference -- the last of three -- is entitled "Looking Forward: The Future of the #MeToo Movement," and features presentations by Dr. Mariam Durrani, assistant professor of anthropology at Hamilton College, and Dr. Bianca Williams, associate professor of anthropology at CUNY Graduate Center, and author of "The Pursuit of Happiness: Black Women, Diasporic Dreams, and the Politics of Emotional Transnationalism."

Dr. Durrani's presentation is entitled "The Paradox of #MeToo: When Hashtags Aren't Enough." Dr. Williams's presentation is entitled "Race, Gender, and Healing: How Will We Know that #MeToo is 'Successful' as a Movement?"
