BYO Truth: Language Matters and (Mis)Information in the Public Sphere

This is the first session of the sixth annual multidisciplinary conference of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at William Paterson University entitled "BYO Truth: Language Matters and (Mis)information in the Public Sphere." This first session of the conference covers language, truth, and storytelling, and seeks to make sense of the current conceptual fog surrounding their uses within contemporary sociopolitical frameworks. The speakers of this session include Ana Celia Zentella, professor emeritus of ethnic studies at UC San Diego, and Sara Gorman, public health and behavioral science expert. Dr. Zentella's presentation is entitled "Trumped Up: Combating Alarming Misinformation About LatinUs and Our Language(s)," while Dr. Gorman's presentation is entitled "Science Denial in a Post-Truth World."

This second session of the conference covers truth and misinformation, particularly in online spaces, and how each affects digitally-organized publics and cultural engagement. The speakers of this session include Jennifer Forestal, assistant professor of political science at Stockton University, and Paul Mihailidis, associate professor of marketing communication at Emerson College. Dr. Forestal's presentation is entitled "Beyond Gatekeeping: On Propaganda and Digital Publics," while Dr. Mihailidis's presentation is entitled "Civic Media Literacies: Re-imagining Engagement For an Age of Distrust."
