Art and Robots: Open House for New Robot Lab at William Paterson University
November 12, 2015 • 4:00-6:00 p.m.
Center for New Art Robot Laboratory
The Power Arts Center • 25 Power Avenue, Wayne, NJ
William Paterson University’s College of the Arts and Communication and its Department of Art invite you to join Michael Rees, director of its Center for New Art, for a reception to celebrate the University’s new state-of-the-art, large-scale robot for carving sculpture. It is the only carving robot of its kind at a college or university in New Jersey.
There will be light refreshments, brief remarks, a tour of the facility, and a robot demonstration. Attendees will have an opportunity to receive a personal 3D portrait created on site using the latest 3D scanning technology (time permitting).
This new robotic system will allow undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and visiting artists to combine computer modeling and animation programs with computer-aided manufacturing software to sculpt with precision 3D objects in wood, foam, and soft metals. Students will gain valuable career-oriented creative and technological skills. Plans include collaborative projects between the Department of Art and University programs in anthropology, environmental science, business, and computer science to use the robot to create three-dimensional objects that enhance student learning. The new robot has been dubbed “Blossom” by students because it is reminiscent of an unfolding mechanical flower.
