William Paterson University Center for Chinese Art Presents Mengqi Wang Exhibition “Where the Heart Belongs” at the New York Gallery of Chinese Art from February 9 to March 10 --Lecture/demonstration by Mengqi Wang at William Paterson University in conjunction with his exhibition to be held on February 5 and 12 January 24, Wayne, N.J. —The Center for Chinese Art at William Paterson University will present an exhibition of Chinese ink paintings by Mengqi Wang, a leading figure of China’s New Literati Painting circle, “Where the Heart Belongs.” The exhibition is curated at the New York Gallery of Chinese Art located at 91a Allen Street in Manhattan from February 9 to March 10. Timed to coordinate with the Chinese New Year, the paintings can be viewed Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. There will be an opening reception at the Gallery on Saturday, February 9 from 3 to 6 p.m. Admission is free. Wang will present a lecture/demonstration on Chinese ink painting at William Paterson University on Tuesday, February 5, and on China’s New Literati Paintings on Tuesday, February 12 from 2 to 4.30 p.m. The sessions will be held in the Power Art Center at 25 Power Avenue on campus in Wayne, N.J. The exhibition, lectures and demonstrations are jointly organized with the William Paterson University Center for Chinese Art, the New York Gallery of Chinese Art, USA, and the Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Research Institute at Beijing Jiaotong University in China. The 60 artworks in this exhibition were created in recent years, and all are small sizes, “essays” as Wang calls them. However, each artwork showcases the artist’s talent, passion, purity of the ink brushes, his soul-colliding impact and artistic appeal. Wang believes that ink brush, sense, aspiration, manner and spirit have to work with “taste,” and feels that Chinese Literati painting is probably the most luxurious and unique taste in terms of observation and study on forms and contents of the ink brush—and where the difficulty lies. Mengqi Wang was chair and professor of the Chinese painting department at Nanjing Arts Institute and professor of the Shanghai University Art College. Currently, he is a researcher at the China National Academy of Painting in Beijing. His works have been included in Chinese national exhibitions and international exhibitions such as China: 5,000 Years, Innovation and Transformation in the Arts at the Guggenheim Museum.
