Higher Education Student Assistance Authority

The Higher Education Student Assistance Authority (HESAA) is the state agency that runs the Tuition Aid Grant (TAG) Program, Education Opportunity Fund Grants (EOF)New Jersey College Loans to Assist State Students (NJCLASS) and various scholarship programs. They also have online services, tools, and other resources.

Students and parent can access the 2019-2020 NJ TAG Estimator This is an estimate of average award values for eligible, full-time recipients, to be used for planning purposes only. 

How do I apply for New Jersey State Aid?

The New Jersey Financial Aid Management System (NJFAMS) is available for all New Jersey students who apply for NJ state aid for the 2018-2019 academic year. NJFAMS is a user-friendly, real-time system. To create an account, click here.

The steps to applying for New Jersey State Aid are:

  1. Complete the FAFSA.
  2. Establish an NJFAMS account.
  3. Answer the NJ state-specific questions. 
FAFSA Confirmation Page & NJ State-Specific Questions

In order for the State of New Jersey to determine your eligibility for state awards (TAG, EOF, NJSTARSII), you need to answer several state questions when you complete your FAFSA. These questions are found in a link on the Confirmation page, which appears once you submit your FAFSA. Look for “Optional Feature – Start your state application – Click here if you want to apply for New Jersey state-based financial aid." The Federal Processor will forward your FAFSA information to the State of New Jersey for consideration for state financial aid.

FAFSA Processing Deadlines

  • April 15th - continuing students 
  • September 15th - new applicants
  • February 15th - all other applicants (Spring semester only)
Additional Questions & Requested Documents

Each student who wishes to apply for New Jersey State Aid will need to log in and set up an NJFAMS account. Students may need to provide requested documents or respond to additional questions to determine their 2018-2019 state aid eligibility. After you have logged in to your NJFAMS account, click on “To Do List for 2018-2019” to submit information for completion of your application.
