B.A. Degree Requirements

To graduate with a BA in English, students must earn 120 academic credits overall.  This will include meeting all UCC requirements, and taking at least 36 credits in English. Students have a choice of three concentrations: Education, Literature and Writing. The English courses students will take depend on the chosen concentration and whether students are also pursuing a degree in Education. 


BA English: Education

Portal (3 credits):

  • ENG 2000: Introduction to Literary Analysis

British Literature (9 credits):

  • ENG 3010 English Literature Through The Neoclassical Period
  • ENG 3020 English Literature: Romantic Through Modern

Choose one from the following:

  • ENG 4110 Shakespeare Comedy/Hist
  • ENG 4120 Shakespeare Tragedy/Rom

American Literature (9 credits):

  • ENG 3040: American Literature 1865-1914
  • ENG 2500: Literature of The Harlem Renaissance
  • ENG 2280: Latino/A Literature in The US

European Literature (3 credits):

  • ENG 3050: Literature of Western Europe to the Renaissance

Creative Writing (3 credits):

  • ENG 2310: Introduction to Creative Writing

Linguistics (3 credits):

  • ENG 2020: Language and Technology

Global Literature (3 credits):

  • ENG 3540: Readings in Global Literature

Adolescent Literature (3 credits):

  • ENG 3360: Introduction to Adolescent Literature

2 additional English Elective Courses, one of which must be chosen from the following non-Lit categories: creative writing, rhetoric and writing, linguistics, or other (non-literature) English courses

Core Requirements (6 credits):

  • ENG 2310: Introduction to Creative Writing

and

  • ENG 2000: Introduction to Literary Analysis OR ENG 2040: Introduction to Rhetoric and Writing

Requirements for Concentration (18 credits):

Choose 6 from:  ENG 3000, 3090, 3340, 3320, 3380, 3390, 3430, 3550, 4030

Literature & Electives (9 credits):

Choose 2 Literature Classes

1 additional English Course, which must be chosen from the following categories: literature, rhetoric and writing, linguistics, or other (non-creative writing) English course.
