Japanese Teacher Preparation Program

Earn 30 credits in as little as one year

  • Qualify for a Certificate of Eligibility for Teaching Japanese in K-12 Schools
  • Earn a second B.A. in Asian Studies-Japanese Language Track

William Paterson University began the Japanese Language Teacher Preparation Program in Fall 2009. Students successfully competing this program will be qualified for a Certificate of Eligibility and earn a second B.A. in the Asian Studies Program Japanese Language Track. The 30 - credit curriculum provides state- approved courses in Japanese language, pedagogy, methodology, culture, and literature, offered in evening, weekend, and on-line formats, convenient for both full- time students and working professionals.

The Japanese Language Teacher Preparation Program is ideal for heritage or native speakers of Japanese who currently hold a BA degree and who seek a career in teaching World Language in New Jersey schools. It also offers a directed track for all students of Japanese looking ahead to careers in education who wish to broaden their skills and abilities.


  1. B.A. degree 
  2. Permanent U.S. residency or F1 student visa
  3. Fluency in Japanese & English

Eligibility to Teach Japanese
  • B.A. degree in Japanese Language with minimum GPA of 2.75
  • 3-credit-course, Methods of Teaching a Second Language
  • Minimum rating of "Intermediate- High" on the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview in Japanese.
