Different by Design - Pathways to Leadership

The Educational Leadership program at William Paterson University has been conceived to be Different by Design by providing student choice allowing: a) rolling admissions, b) flexible program pacing from two to six years, c) 30 graduate credits of coursework aligned with the National Educational Leadership Preparation (NELP) Program Recognition Standards, d) an authentic 300-hour internship in educational leadership, e) hybrid, online, and face-to-face learning platforms, and f) Saturday class meetings for hybrid courses. This flexible design is responsive to student needs to balance the demands of personal and professional time, finances, and family.

Module 1 - Leadership: Six required courses (18 graduate credits). The six Module 1 courses are offered in the hybrid format. Each course consists of four Saturday face-to-face class meetings for one full day of instruction and 15 online asynchronous class hours. These courses address the content knowledge and educational leadership skills regarding: Mission, Vision, and Improvement; Ethics and Professional Norms; Equity, Inclusiveness, and Cultural Responsiveness; Community and External Leadership; Operations and Management; and Building Professional Capacity.

Module 2 - Curriculum & Supervision: Four courses - two required and two electives (12 graduate credits). Module 2 courses are offered in the online and face-to-face formats. These courses address the content knowledge and educational leadership skills regarding: Learning and Instruction; and Building Professional Capacity. Students who already hold a master's degree can request to have their transcripts evaluated to determine if any of these course requirements can be satisfied with courses previously taken. Note: courses taken as part of one master's degree cannot be "double counted" toward a second degree, but can be used for completion of the certification programs.

Module 3 - Internship: Four courses (4 graduate credits). Complete a 300-hour internship in educational leadership aligned to the professional standards for school leaders in N.J.A.C. 6A:9-3.4 in accordance with the roles and responsibilities as a principal, independent of other course requirements. Students are required to complete four, one-credit courses each requiring 75 hours of internship experiences.

Candidates must complete a minimum of 30 graduate credits, either within the master’s program or in addition to it, following the quality components of preparation to promote student learning as set forth in N.J.A.C. 6A:9-3.4(a)1-6, the Professional Standards for School Leaders (PSEL).

Upon successful completion of the 30 graduate credits of coursework (Module 1 and Module 2) and the 300-hour internship in educational leadership (Module 3), candidates will earn an M.Ed. degree in Educational Leadership and/or complete the Graduate Program of Study for Principal Certification. Upon passing the School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA), candidates will qualify for the New Jersey Principal Certificate of Eligibility (Endorsement 0200) if they have five years of full-time experience, and receive the Supervisor Standard Certificate (Endorsement 0106) if they have three years of experience.

Admission Requirements

In addition to the University’s admission requirements:

  • Official transcripts from all institutions of higher education previously attended
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a cumulative GPA of not less than 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Copies of all Provisional and/or Standard instructional, educational services, or administrative certificate(s)

Each applicant must clearly demonstrate that she/he can fulfill the requirements of the program and have the capacity to complete graduate level work. Documentation of all these requirements must be submitted online or sent to the Office of Graduate Services, 300 Pompton road, Morrison Hall 102, Wayne, NJ 07470. Transfer credit is considered but limited to not more than six (6) credits for courses that closely match course descriptions of those offered in the educational leadership program. Courses must have been taken within the past six years and consistent with the university graduate course transfer policy. Final decisions are made by the program director after careful review of all submitted materials.
