Program Description:

The Elementary Education (K-6) Teacher of Students with Disabilities and an endorsement in subject area 5-8 major is a 49 credit sequence of courses that qualifies candidates to become eligible for certification as a teacher of all subjects from kindergarten through grade six (K-6), as a teacher of student with disabilities and as a teacher in the subject specialization in grades 5-8. In addition to UCC requirements, students must take an appropriate academic major--English, History, Mathematics, Science, or World Languages.

Steps to begin Professional Sequence of Education Coursework:

  • Enroll as an Elementary Education major with an endorsement in Teacher of Students with Disabilities and Middle School Education and as an appropriate academic major--(English, History, Mathematics, Science, or World Languages)
  • Complete required bilingual, multicultural, and child development courses with at least a C grade
  • Qualifying scores on the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators exams (5751), SATs, or ACTs (please refer to the Praxis Core webpage for more information and deadlines)
  • Obtain a NJ Substitute Teaching License
  • Achieve a cumulative 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) or higher
  • Complete required math courses before the clinical experience (3rd) semester.
  • Complete two science courses before the Clinical Experience. One science course must be Human Biology or Applied Anatomy and Physiology.
  • Complete two history courses before the Clinical experience. One history course must be in American History.
  • Official passing PRAXIS Subjects Assessments (formerly known as the Praxis II) scores in both Elementary Multiple Subjects 5001 ) and the Middle School Subject(s) of Specialization must received by August 1 for Fall or January 1 for Spring Clinical Practice

Please Note: No more than one additional course may be taken during clinical practice.

Notes / Exit Requirements:

  • Field Experience applications are due one year in advance: each fall (October 15) for placement the next fall, and each spring (March 15) for placement the next spring.
  • Instructions and applications are available for download from the Office of Field Experience's webpage. Completed applications and all supporting documents are signed by the adviser and submitted to the Office of Field Experiences.
  • Students may take one additional course during Clinical Practice.
  • Complete program requirements successfully.
  • A cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 and a minimum 3.0 GPA in their education courses on a 4.00 scale.
