Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo

Michael Newman and Laura Oltman form a classical guitar partnership recognized by awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, Chamber Music America, and ASCAP. They recently premiered Concierto Buenos Aires, a new work com- posed by Nuevo Tango Master Daniel Binelli, with l’Orchestre de l’Opéra de Reims in France. The duo are artistic advisers to the D’Addario Foundation Performance Series at Carnegie Hall, and founders and artistic directors of the New York Guitar Seminar at Mannes School of Music, Raritan River Music, and the new Lanciano Interna- tional Guitar Seminar in Italy. Newman is on the guitar and chamber music faculty of Mannes College and The College of New Jersey. Oltman teaches at Princeton University and Lafayette College. "The duo played with supple, integrated phasing and a welcome sense of dynamic contrast. Their program offed variety, substance, and originality."—The Los Angeles Times

Benavides-Galvez Violin/Guitar Duo

The Benavides- Galvez Violin/ Guitar Duo is a collaboration between prize- winning soloists to form a dynamic chamber ensemble. Violinist Romulo Benavides, of Venezuela, has performed with the Simon Bolivar Symphony, the Venezuelan Symphony Orchestra, the Carabobo Chamber Orchestra, and in the Aspen Music Festival's Starling Recital Series. Guitarist David Galvez, of Peru, has performed solo and chamber recitals at Carnegie Hall and Merkin Hall in New York and as a guest soloist with the Manhattan Philharmonic Orchestra, The National Symphony Orchestra, and the Trujillo Orchestra of Peru. Benavides holds a degree from the Juilliard School and Galvez from the Manhattan School of Music. Currently, Galvez is a guitar professor at the Long Island Conservatory in Long Island, New York.

Lubos Naprstek, Luthier

Lubos Naprstek, New Jersey-based luthier, will talk about his guitars and their construction, which will be available for purchase. Naperstek learned the craft of instrument repair from guitar technicians and built his first hand- made classical guitar at age 17. After years of work as a guitar technician and as a student of guitar building, he developed a line of custom handmade classical guitars in 2003. Today, he spends much of his time attending various festivals and trade conventions throughout the country to promote his business. His knowledge and expertise in vintage classical guitars grants him privileged access to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Christie’s Auctions in New York for private measuring and photographing of some of the oldest and rarest guitars in the world.
