In January 2018, Club President Matthew Mullins, KD2MLR and Club Officer Tiernan Doyle, KD2OOC, traveled in coordination with an effort lead by Brave New Radio WPSC 88.7FM and the William Paterson University Department of Communications to assist the recovery effort on the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico and its community radio station, Radio Vieques, WVQR 90.1. In the wake of Hurricane Maria, Puerto Rico experienced a total communications blackout, having rendered all cellular, landline and infrastructure based communication inoperable. During this blackout, Community Radio broadcasts and Amateur Radio communications remained functional and facilitated communications and information in situations where local authorities had difficulties communicating events or news regarding relief, health and welfare, and emergency response.

Amateur Radio continues to play a vital role in the recovery and future emergency response plans of the Territory. In cooperation with the local FM Broadcast station Radio Vieques and the Vieques Island Amateur Radio Club, WP4PQV, the Pioneer Amateur Radio Club, W2WPU club is currently helping to raise funds for the purchasing of amateur radio equipment, sponsoring local amateur radio classes and communications trainings, and supporting the growth of the amateur radio hobby on Vieques as a means of facilitating community communications.
