To the William Paterson University Community

Yesterday was a great day for William Paterson University. The campus hosted the first gubernatorial debate between Governor Chris Christie and Senator Barbara Buono, which was televised  throughout New Jersey and our region by WCBS-TV in New York and KYW-TV in Philadelphia.  Over 800 people filled Shea Auditorium, and over 100 elected officials and William Paterson board members attended a private reception at Hobart Manor prior to the debate.  The debate was a lively one with each candidate weighing in on issues important to the citizens of New Jersey including job creation, unemployment, property taxes, higher education, Superstorm Sandy recovery efforts, balancing the budget, progress made and work yet to be done for our state.  Two students had the opportunity to ask the candidates a question. Lisa Swarn, a senior biology major asked the candidates how they would make higher education more affordable for students and their families. Meghen Murray, a senior business administration – marketing major asked what each candidate proposed to do about jobs in the state…especially for graduating college students like herself.

The entire campus community contributed to make this event such a success. Thanks are owed to many people and it will take time for me to extend appreciation to all who worked tirelessly with a clear commitment to making our University glow in the public spotlight.  I hope every member of the William Paterson community feels proud that our University provided such a fine communal effort from our building and grounds staff, who made the campus immaculate, to our campus police who provided safety, security and order,  to our Marketing and Public Relations staff, our IRT staff, Shea staff, student volunteers and all who helped in any way.  A thank you to our faculty and students who organized opportunities for the students to watch the debate and conduct panel discussions afterwards.  Pat DeDeo and Stuart Goldstein above all are to be congratulated on a very successful event that has enhanced the reputation of William Paterson University. They, and their teams, worked non-stop on this for weeks and are now considered the debate experts in New Jersey. So thank you everyone and to all the alumni who sent me twitters and emails, thanks for your support.

Sincerely,
