Background Notes (U.S. Department of State)
The Background Notes series offers concise profiles of over 170 individual countries and selected international organizations. The national profiles feature basic geographic and demographic information as well as descriptions of the government, economy, and military/defense establishment. An overview of each country's political conditions, foreign relations, and travel/business climate is also provided. Updated periodically.

U.S. Census Bureau
The Census Bureau's web site provides a one-stop portal to a variety of Census information, including news, data, and analysis tools. In addition to the 2000 and 1990 decennial census of population and housing, the site offers links to the economic census, the census of governments, data on agriculture, foreign trade, industries, and transportation, and a variety of mapping tools.

General Accounting Office Reports
The General Accounting Office is the investigative arm of Congress. It examines the use of public funds, evaluates federal programs and activities, and provides analyses, options, recommendations, and other assistance to help the Congress make effective oversight, policy, and funding decisions. Its published reports cover a wide variety of topics and offer useful sources of information for many student research projects. This web page enables you to search and browse a database of reports issued since 1975; all reports issued since 1995 are available online in full text.
