STC Job Descriptions

Student Technology Consultant in the:
Central Academic Technology (CAT):
CAT STC
 

Job Description: Staff the campus in the Student Technology Labs in the Atrium, Library, Science lab (S 217 A, B); help students, faculty and staff use the hardware and software; basic cleaning and maintenance of the printers. Library work includes checking out software and database consultation and lending out laptops for classroom usage.
Qualifications: Thorough knowledge in computer applications and hardware. In order to better serve the community, we seek to represent that community and actively recruit from all academic areas. Willingness to learn, maturity, responsibilty, and dependability are the most important prerequisites. Concerns are key attributes of successful STCs.

Valley Technology Resources (VTR):
Valley Road STC

Job Description: Staff the campus Valley Road Labs, which consist of rooms 1004, 1020, and 1021. The STC job is to help patrons use the hardware and software in the labs; basic cleaning and maintenance of the Valley Technology Labs and printers. Also, multimedia service will be involved, assisting the Multimedia Specialists at Valley Road with lending out laptops for classroom usage.
Qualifications:
Thorough knowledge in computer applications and hardware. In order to better serve the community, we seek to represent that community and actively recruit from all academic areas. Willingness to learn, maturity, responsiblity, and depandability are the most important prerequisites. Interpersonal communication skills, listening and reflecting user concerns are key attributes of successful STCs.

Digital Media Technology Specialists (DMTS):

Job Description:(i) Staffing Digital Media Labs in the Atrium, Ben Shahn, and Valley Road. Design and construction of multimedia and Internet applications in co-operation with faculty and students.(ii) Offer training sessions to the STC Corps and workshops to the University community. Training will cover a wide range of software including Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, SPSS, Flash, Publisher, as well as Dreamweaver, eRecruiting, and WpConnect/Portal ( which includes Blackboard, E-mail, Student Services).
Qualifications:
(i) The ability to work with students and faculty creating web pages which includes the knowledge of HTML. Responsibility and an aptitude to learn are most important, training on the applications will be continuous, including Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Flash, and Publisher. DMTS specialize in Scanning, CD Burning and Printing Transferencies. Understanding of basic copyright issues is a must.
Extensive knowledge of all workshops content with the ability to be articulate and enthusiastic. Communication and teaching skills are an important aspect of the job.



Computer Lab Specialists (CLS):

Job Description: Hardware/software service and maintenance service in all student computing labs and in certain cases, faculty offices.
Qualifications:
Basic understanding of computer hardware and software installation and maintenance. The ability to further this knowledge by learning and collaborating with a team of hardware and software technicians. Specific duties include installation/replacement of hardware such as Ethernet cards, hard drives, memory, motherboards, mice, and keyboards. Most of the labs consist of Dell Pentium PCs with a few labs contain Macintosh all with networked Dell printers. In addition, CLS members commonly understake special projects concerning hardware and software issues.

Academic Technology Assistant (ATA):
ATA's

Job Description: Works closely with faculty and administration to further the academic goals of the university. The work may call on knowledge of webpage design and maintenance, as well as MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, MS PowerPoint, and SPSS.
Qualifications:
Extensive knowledge of all workshops content with the ability to be articulate and enthusiastic. Communication and teaching skills are an important aspect of the job.
STC Team Leader (TL):
Team Leader
Job Description: Scheduled hours; Oversees work and special projects in the labs as well as mentoring and shift scheduling. Team Leaders also work in the lab, on special porjects given by the administration, and coordinating projects and job duties as well as mentoring and scheduling.
Qualifications:
A Team Leader must have exceptional technology skills and must be willing to learn on the job. Good communication and teaching skills are an absolute necessity. Must be committed to the mission of IRT and be willing to stand by the STC Handbook Rules even when under peer pressure. Must be able to coordinate and mentor STC's work without being coercive.
Student Coordinatoor:

Job Description: Works directly with the Assistant Director for Academic Technology to coordinate long-range plans and training of incoming STCs and oversees all departments.
Qualifications:
Must have proven him or herself as a successful Team Manager with leadership skills. Must demonstrate dedication to the program and ability to work well with the Assistant Director.
Administrative Assistant:

Job Description: Works directly with the Director of Academic Technology and the Student Coordinators of the STC Program to coordinate long-range plans, planning of training for the STC corps, payroll, budget development and oversight of all departments.
Qualifications:
Must have proven him or herself as a successful team leader/manager. Must demonstrate dedication to the program and ability to work well with the coordinator.
Chain of Command:
ATA and GTC's

If you have a problem as an STC, you should go to your immediate team leader. If the Leader(s) cannot solve your problem, then the next step is to go to the Student Coordinator(s). If the Student Coordinator cannot solve your probelm, the next step is to go to Denise Giummarra (giummarrad@wpunj.edu). If Denise cannot solve your problem, the next step is to go to Robert Harris (Harrisr@wpunj.edu). See the Organizational Chart as an example on page 9. How STCs fit into the department of Instruction and Research Technology (IRT) is on page 9. An Anonymous alternative after the chain of command is followed is the Suggestion Box in atrium 108. These are reviewed by the Director of IRT.
