To the William Paterson University Community

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Warren Sandmann as Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs of William Paterson University pending Board of Trustees approval. He will take on his new responsibilities July 1, 2013.

Dr. Sandmann joins us from Minnesota State University, Mankato where for the past five years he served as Associate Provost and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs. Prior to that position, he was Assistant Vice President for Undergraduate Studies overseeing the general education curriculum at the 15,000 student campus as well as supervising the Office of Institutional Assessment and First Year Experience. He had responsibility for a $76 million budget and is familiar with employment law and collective bargaining. From 1997 through 2003, Dr. Sandmann was Chair of the Department of Communication Studies with the rank of full professor. In that capacity, he coordinated curriculum development, participated in tenure, promotion and retention decisions of faculty, and served on the Chairs’ Council. He also taught undergraduate and graduate courses, including online courses, in communication, at the State University of New York, Geneseo and was a lecturer at San Jose State University between 1992 and 1996.

Dr. Sandmann received his Ph.D. in Communication Studies with an emphasis in Rhetorical Studies in 1992 from the University of Iowa and his M.A. in Speech Communication (1989) and B.S. in English (1983) from Minnesota State University, Mankato. He is the author of numerous articles and book chapters as well as a regular presenter at academic conferences in his discipline. Dr. Sandmann has published and presented on legal studies, communication technology, national sovereignty, free speech decisions of the Supreme Court and communication law.

Dr. Sandmann visited our campus on March 14 and met with various faculty, staff and student groups, held a public forum for the entire campus community and met with members of the Administration.  My thanks to all those who attended these many meetings and provided valuable feedback.

Dr. Sandmann was part of a national search which began last fall following Provost Ed Weil’s wish to return to the faculty.  We want to thank Ed for his leadership over the last seven years and gratefully acknowledge the growth of our academic programs during his tenure here.  Specifically, we are indebted to Ed for his leadership in developing the Academic Plan 2007-2012, and most importantly, the development and implementation of the University Core Curriculum. During the period between May16 and June 30, 2013, Associate Provost Stephen Hahn will serve as interim provost.

The search committee was chaired by Anne Ciliberti, Dean of Library Services, and included Alejandro Anreus, Stephen Betts, Kim Daniel-Robinson, Gerri Mongillo, John Parras, Pradeep Patnaik, Bob Seal, Susanna Tardi, and Bernadette Tiernan. I will take this opportunity to especially thank Dean Anne Ciliberti and the members of the search committee for their diligent and thorough work on filling this important position.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Sandmann when he arrives on campus as a new member of the University community.
