To the William Paterson University Community

The statewide destruction of hurricane Sandy is heartbreaking and almost unfathomable. My thoughts and prayers are with our friends, neighbors, and family members who have struggled with the impact of the storm.

At William Paterson University, we have been very fortunate. The students who have remained in the residence halls have stayed safe and sound throughout the storm and its aftermath with onsite support from residence life staff and public safety officers. By properly responding to safety warnings, the students have stayed out of harms way.

As you know, the campus has been without power since Monday evening. PSEG crew members are working hard but have not yet been able to provide us with an estimate on when to expect a restoration of power.  We will continue to update you through our full range of communications on a timely basis so that you are well informed of our progress and plans for reopening the campus.  We will update you as early as possible tomorrow (Thursday) regarding the possibility of reopening on Friday.

The condition of the campus has been remarkably strong. We have lost a few trees and one solar panel but there is no damage to buildings and no flooding.

I toured the campus this morning with Steve Bolyai and Bob Fulleman and found the students in good spirits and our facilities and grounds staff already hard at work clearing the debris.

I would like to offer a public thank you to our residence life, facilities, public safety, and food service staff members who have worked tirelessly to ensure the safety and well being of the students and the campus. This has been accomplished while they and their families, like all of us, have faced the challenges of Hurricane Sandy off of the campus. Thank you also to all of our students, faculty, and staff for the cooperation and flexibility needed during this difficult time. This commitment and collaboration is yet another example of the strength of our William Paterson University community.

I wish all the best to you and your families for a swift and smooth recovery from the impact of this unprecedented storm.
