To the William Paterson University Community

As our region slowly recovers from the incredible force of Hurricane Sandy, I continue to be saddened by the almost inconceivable impact of this horrific storm.

Returning to our ordinary routines and a full schedule of classes this week will not be easy for some people still affected by the storm. I realize that some students, faculty and staff commuting to campus do not have power or heat in their homes or are living in damaged residences in neighborhoods strewn with downed trees and power lines. Traffic is significant and finding gasoline remains a challenge.  Our hearts go out to you as you recover from the storm. For any employee still feeling the direct effects of the storm, please notify your supervisor or department chair so we can discuss what additional steps might be needed to assist you. For any student still directly affected, please speak with your advisor and your professors so that we may try to assist you. We will be communicating further regarding how to make up course work that has been missed. Registration for the spring semester has been rescheduled to begin November 12 and students will receive details through email.

We are grateful that our campus has returned to normal with classes, activities and offices back on normal schedules as of this morning. I thank you for your patience as PSE&G worked to repair its damaged equipment and to restore our power. Fortunately, little damage was done to our facilities.  Throughout the storm and its aftermath our dedicated staff worked around the clock to keep students safe and to ensure the security of our campus.

I would like to thank all of our University staff members who left their own families and homes to care for the University.  I first would like to thank our police department including officers, dispatchers and support staff for their diligence. Second, I would like to thank the Residence Life directors and other staff who remained at their posts in the residence halls throughout the storm caring for nearly 500 students who remained on campus as Sandy descended upon us. I also would like to thank the Food Services team who continued to serve food throughout the week and who kept up good spirits for all.  A special thanks to the buildings and grounds crew who immediately went to work clearing fallen trees and debris from roadways and paths so that our campus was restored.  Thank you to staff who ensured the steady stream of communications updates to the campus community.  Thank you to staff from technology and network services and hospitality services.  Thank you to individuals who responded from the physical plant department, including electricians, HVAC, plumbers, carpentry, custodial services, mechanics and support staff.

As announced in our frequent updates, working without power and easy access to fuel was not an easy task. On behalf of the trustees and entire William Paterson University community, thank you.

Many people have asked how they can help and I am truly amazed by the generosity of everyone. Some of our students already volunteered to serve meals in Wayne at the PAL center while many others have volunteered in their local communities. The generosity of the William Paterson community is notable. If anyone would like to volunteer in the local area I encourage you to reach out to the Wayne VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters).  It is a volunteer organization created in 2011 after Hurricane Irene to provide aid to fellow residents during disasters. Wayne VOAD is currently providing a variety of services and coordinating the efforts of various businesses and other local entities to provide relief to residents who are without power due to Hurricane Sandy.  VOAD can be reached by email at waynevoad@gmail.com.

Thank you everyone for your support and patience. We still have a ways to go but believe it is important to restart the semester now. All my best to each of you.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Waldron
