To the William Paterson University Community

I am pleased to report the completion of several major upgrades to performance and practice spaces for the Music Department.  These projects greatly improve the environment for our students to learn, our faculty to teach, and our audiences to enjoy a wide range of performances on campus.

Two large rooms in Shea have been completely transformed, providing modern and aesthetically pleasing venues for faculty, student, and guest performances.  Shea 101, which serves as a recital hall and instructional space for the Music Department, has received a complete redesign, including acoustics, a new stage, seating, lighting, control booth and interior finishes.  Shea 103, a rehearsal space for large ensembles, has been renovated with new acoustical treatments, audiovisual capabilities, and interior finishes. In addition, six new soundproof practice rooms have been created in Gaedes Hall.

Shea Auditorium has received a significant interior renovation, including new seats, paint, flooring, and retrofitted lighting that is also energy efficient.  The seating replaced forty-year-old chairs, many of which were broken beyond repair. The public spaces in the lower level of Shea also received a makeover:  hallways and doors were painted, many ceiling tiles were replaced, and new floors, lighting, and display boards were installed. I would like to thank the Capital Planning and Physical Plant staff, who completed all of these upgrades in just a month during the winter break.

A very special thank you to the Music Department students, faculty, and staff, and for their patience, assistance and flexibility during the long construction period for these projects.  We look forward to celebrating these new spaces with our music department colleagues during a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Shea Auditorium on Tuesday, February 4 at 5:30 p.m.  I also encourage everyone on campus to attend and enjoy an upcoming performance and help to get the word out about these wonderfully renovated venues.
