To the William Paterson University Community

William Paterson University is committed to the highest standards of knowledge, inquiry, preparation, academic freedom and integrity.  This commitment requires the ability for the University to participate in the free exchange of knowledge and creative expression with scholars and academic institutions throughout the world.

The resolution to boycott Israeli academic institutions that was recently passed by the American Studies Association as well as other academic organizations is in direct opposition to academic freedom, which is fundamental to the creation and pursuit of knowledge. It is also contrary to William Paterson University’s mission and core values, which encourage active involvement in a multicultural world, the expression of all aspects of diversity, and the expansion of the boundaries of knowledge through international research collaborations, study, and travel.

Therefore, I have joined with the presidents of our sister public higher education institutions in New Jersey in opposing this boycott, and have also joined with representatives from academic institutions in signing a statement by the Association of American Universities that criticizes the boycott.

I will continue to support the academic freedom of William Paterson faculty and students to form and disseminate their own opinions on the boycott.
