To the William Paterson University Community
In 2009, the IT Management Team and the IT Advisory Committee completed an Information Technology Plan 2010-2013. Among other recommendations, the Plan recommended establishing a Chief Information Officer position. The Board of Trustees Committee on Educational Policy and Student Development, at its January 2010 meeting, met with representatives of the IT team and reviewed the draft plan. It supported the idea of the creation of such a CIO position and the full Board approved the position at its June 25, 2011 meeting. Finally, in the University’s Middle States Self-Study Report, the University community suggested the creation of such a position and this became a specific recommendation of the Middles States Review Team at the completion of its visit.
Based upon all of the above input and after careful conversation with the Cabinet and with the individual managers, I am pleased to announce the creation of the position of Chief Information Officer for William Paterson University and the appointment of Mr. Len Bogdon to that position. Commencing July 1, 2011, the Chief Information Officer and the Department of Information Systems will report directly to Steve Bolyai, Vice President for Administration and Finance.
With almost forty years of service to the University, Len has overseen the transition of information technology from mainframe computing services with punch cards to desktop computing, wireless laptops, WIFI, smart phone apps, enterprise systems, and cloud services. He has directed the implementation of several major installations and upgrades of enterprise systems including Information Associates, SCT Plus, and Banner. Both Len and his dedicated staff strongly support the goal of providing the University with reliable state-of-the-art network, computing resources, and information technology services.
In addition, Dr. Anne Ciliberti, Director of Library Services since 2001 and in prior positions within the library, will be appointed as Dean of the David and Lorraine Cheng Library effective July 1, 2011. Anne will report directly to Provost Ed Weil and become a member of the Council of Deans. This organizational change places the Library more visibly within the academic structure of the University, strengthens the role of the librarians as members of the faculty, and reaffirms the Cheng Library as an essential component of the University’s educational programs and commitment to research.
Since her appointment as Director, Anne has overseen the transformation of the Library to a comprehensive source for both traditional books and periodicals, as well as digitally based educational resources, many of which are available 24/7. The Library has become increasingly committed to the development of information literacy among our students and the expansion and diversification of support for the research needs of our faculty. Anne and the library faculty have also played an active role in campus governance, program assessment, institutional and program accreditations, and statewide educational collaborations.
To ensure IT support for contemporary pedagogies and scholarship for students and faculty, Dr. Sandra Miller, Director of Instruction and Research Technology (IRT), will continue to report to Associate Provost Steve Hahn. Sandie has provided creative leadership and organizational support for emerging educational technologies within the multimedia classroom and through the development of effective opportunities for training and presentation of instruction through online delivery. IRT also provides comprehensive support to University productions and educational programs involving media services and television, video, and radio production.
I want to thank Associate Provost Steve Hahn for his leadership over the years and we look forward to his continued guidance of educational technologies and online course development and delivery. As you know, this year, Steve has taken on the additional responsibilities of Interim Dean of the College of the Arts and Communication for the academic year 2011-2012, while we begin a search for a permanent dean this fall.
Please join me in wishing Len, Anne, and Sandie well.
