Dr. Kathleen Waldron, PhD is president of William Paterson University, now in her seventh year as leader of one of the largest public universities in New Jersey with more than 11,000 students. Located in Wayne on 380 suburban acres, William Paterson University offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees through its five colleges of Arts and Communication, Cotsakos College of Business, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences and Science and Health. The University has a strong Continuing Education College serving northern New Jersey.
Under her leadership, the University has increased the number of full-time faculty, improved retention and graduation rates, revitalized student support, completed a Strategic Plan 2012-2022 and developed several zone master facility plans to renovate and construct new facilities. While keeping education affordable with historically low increases in tuition, she has led strategic investment in student/faculty research, increased alumni relations and philanthropy, facilities renovations and enhanced outside support for the institution.
President Waldron holds a doctorate in Latin American history from Indiana University and a bachelor’s degree in history from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She has lived and traveled extensively in Latin America and has published articles about Venezuelan history. She was a Fulbright fellow in Venezuela at the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello in Caracas. In addition to her focus on Latin America, President Waldron is a frequent speaker at meetings devoted to women’s leadership, including the American Council of Education’s Women’s Network as well as various corporate forums.
President Waldron has more than 18 years of experience in higher education and 17 years of experience in international banking. She served as president of Baruch College of the City University of New York from 2004 to 2009, and dean of the College of Business at Long Island University from 1998 to 2004. Prior to her transition to higher education administration, President Waldron worked at Citibank for 14 years where she directed strategic planning for the Global Private Bank and served as president of Citibank International in Miami.
President Waldron is a Fulbright Fellow and received a Social Science Research Council Fellowship. She was recognized as one of the Top 50 Women in New Jersey by NJBIZ. She was honored by the North Jersey Federal Credit Union as the first recipient of the Annual Women History Makers in North Jersey Award; received the West Bergen Mental Healthcare Distinguished Service Award; the Executive Women of New Jersey Salute to Policy Makers Award; the Greater Paterson Chamber of Commerce Faith in Paterson Award; the 2013 Garden State Green Award; and the St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital Michael and Yolanda Simonelli Community Award. She is a member of the board of the New Jersey Presidents Council, New Jersey Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Tinker Foundation, the Commerce and Industry Association of New Jersey, the Hamilton Partnership for Paterson, NJEDGE.net and is a founding member of the New Jersey Campus Compact.
President Waldron was born in Brooklyn, New York, grew up on Long Island, and traces her paternal family roots to the city of Paterson, New Jersey.
