General Garage Operations

1.    Can I use my ID card to enter Pioneer Garage and pay for parking?

Yes. For those on an academic year or semester plan, you must present your ID card to the card reader at the gate to enter the garage. For those paying hourly/daily, you will take a ticket upon entering the garage. Before you can exit you must pay the parking fee at one of the pay stations inside the garage.

2.    My ID card is an older magnetic stripe-­-only card. Will it work with the parking garage system or do I need to get a new card?

ID cards that were issued within the last two years will work. Any card with the i-­-class logo, located on the back lower left corner of your card, will work. If your card does not have the i-­- class logo, visit Hospitality Services, located in University Commons, Room 100, to get a new card.

3.    How do I exit the garage?

Follow signs to the nearest exit. At the gate:

      o  For daily/hourly parkers: Insert your paid/validated ticket at the gate machine and the gate will open.

      o  For academic year and semester plan parkers: present your ID card to the card reader.

4.    What if the gate doesn’t open when I’m trying to exit the garage?

There is an intercom at the gate. Press the button and you’ll be connected to a person who will help you. (The intercom system is connected to the dispatch office of Campus Police. You will be connected to a live person in this office.)

5.    Can I park my motorcycle in the garage?

No. Sensors of the garage do not function with motorcycles.

6.    Can I park my bicycle in the garage?

No. The garage space is designed for cars and there is currently no bike parking accommodation.

7.    What is the maximum height vehicle I can park in the garage?

Vehicles up to 82 can fit in the garage.

 

Parking Garage Fees

1.    How much does it cost to park at Pioneer Garage and where can I find parking regulations?

2.    Do I still have to pay to park in the Pioneer Garage if I am a resident student and have already paid for room and board?

The garage parking fees are not included in room and board fees. If you want to use the Pioneer

Garage, you need to either sign up for a parking plan or pay the hourly/daily rates each time you use it.

3.    Is there any place at William Paterson where I can park without paying a fee?

Yes. All campus lots other than the parking garage are free of charge, however, vehicle registration and parking decal are required.

4.    Why is there a charge for parking in Pioneer Garage?

Parking garage fees are collected for the sole purpose of defraying the cost of building and operating the garage. The fees have been kept at the minimum necessary for these costs and structured so that, even if the garage operates at full capacity, they will not generate profit over and above the costs. The administration is sensitive to the financial challenges students face and has prioritized keeping the garage fees low while providing a quality solution for the parking needs of the campus community.

5.    How are the Pioneer Garage fees different from the transportation fees I am already paying?

The transportation fee, which is a tuition-related fee and is included in the total tuition charge on your bill, covers the cost of shuttle service between parking lots. The Pioneer Garage fees are

used to defray the cost of building and operating the new garage facility.

 

Academic Year and Semester Parking Plans

1. I am a student. How do I sign up for a parking plan at Pioneer Garage, and how do I pay for it?

Students sign up online. Click here to link to the the sign-up form. Once the form is submitted, the fee will be billed to your student account and you will pay the amount shown on your bill through normal bill payment processing. Access to the garage will be available on the next business day after signing up online.  Resident students must also obtain the hangtag from Campus Police, available the next business day after signing up online. Any car left in the garage overnight (ie: resident student cars) must display the hangtag which indicates to Campus Police that the car is authorized to be in the garage overnight.

2. I am faculty or staff. How do I sign up for a parking plan at Pioneer Garage, and how do I pay for it?

Faculty and staff can sign up for a parking plan by completing a payroll deduction form online. Click here for the Employee sign-up form. You will indicate which plan you want on the form and payroll deductions will begin with the next available payroll, with the cost being deducted in even installments over the plan period. University employees who sign up for a plan via payroll deduction will benefit by paying with pre-tax dollars, thereby reducing income taxes withheld from pay.

Alternatively, employees can sign up and pay for a plan directly in person at Hospitality Services by paying for the plan with cash, credit card, or debit/credit card.

The tax benefit (paying with pre-tax dollars) is not available when making direct payment. You must pay via payroll deduction to get the tax benefit. 

3. I am faculty or staff. Can I pay for hourly or daily parking in the garage using pre-tax dollars?

       No. You must use payroll deduction to get a tax benefit.

4. What if I select the academic year or semester plan after a semester has already started?

At this time, pro-ration of annual and semester fees is not available. You will be charged the full amount of the plan selected regardless of the timing of sign-up. If you wish to start using the garage mid-term, it is recommended that you pay daily/hourly rates until the start date of the next available term.

5. What if I sign up for the academic year or semester plan and end up leaving the university before the plan period is over?

If your official date of departure (such as deregistration or employment termination) occurs during a parking plan period, a refund will be issued for the unused portion of the period, based on prorated number of days of the plan period.

6. Can I pay for parking at Pioneer Garage on a monthly or weekly basis?

No. The available parking garage rates are by year/semester/summer, or by day/hour.

 

Hourly/Daily Parking

1. How do I pay for parking in Pioneer Garage on an hourly or daily basis?

You will take a ticket when you enter the garage. Before exiting, you must pay the parking fee at any one of the pay stations located inside the garage. Do not leave your entry ticket inside your vehicle. When you are ready to leave the garage, you will pay the parking fee by inserting the ticket at a pay station and following instructions to complete payment. The ticket will be validated and returned to you.

To drive out of the garage, insert the paid/validated ticket at the gate machine. The machine will retain the ticket and the gate will open.

2Where are the pay stations located in the garage?

Pay stations are located near the pedestrian entries, which are on the third and fifth tiers of the garage.

3What forms of payment are accepted at the pay stations?

Cash, credit card, and Pioneer Express card are accepted at the pay stations. Debit cards are not accepted, however debit cards that are PIN-less are accepted. 

4What should I do if the pay station does not accept my credit card or Pioneer Express card?

Each pay station has an intercom you can use if there is any problem with making your payment. The intercom system is connected to the dispatch office of Campus Police. You will be connected to a live person in this office.

5. What should I do if I lose my ticket while parked in the garage on an hourly or daily basis?

If you do not have your original ticket when you are leaving the garage go to any of the pay stations in the garage and select the option to pay for a lost ticket. You will be charged the full daily rate.

6. What happens if I’m parked in the garage on a daily or hourly basis, or as a commuter student, faculty, or staff, and accidentally leave my car in the garage overnight? 

Only resident students enrolled in one of the parking plans are allowed to leave a car in the garage overnight. Daily/hourly parkers who do so will be required to pay a full daily rate, which can be done at the pay station. Unauthorized cars left multiple nights or indefinitely will be subject to fines and/or towing.

 

University Parking Regulations

1. Are freshmen allowed to park on campus?

Yes.  Beginning with the 2014-2015 academic year, freshmen will now be allowed to park on campus, including in the garage. 

2. Do I have to register my vehicle if I don’t park in Pioneer Garage?

Yes. All students, faculty, and staff are required to register their vehicle with the University Police

Department and display a decal when parking anywhere on campus. 

3. When I sign up for a parking plan, is my vehicle automatically registered?

No, you still need to register your car with the University Police Department and display the decal on the rear window of your car. To register your car and obtain the decal, go to the online vehicle registration form.

4. What do I need to do if I get a new car?

You must register the new car with the University Police Department. To obtain a parking decal, go to the online vehicle registration form.

5. If I am on the academic year or semester plan, can I have one car parked in Pioneer Garage and another car parked in one of the surface lots?

No. Although you are allowed to register more than one car, at any one time you can only have one car on campus.

6. Can I leave my car in the garage overnight?

Only resident students who sign up for the annual or semester plan are authorized to keep cars in the garage overnight. A hangtag will be issued to all resident students who sign up (resident students must go to Campus Police after successfully signing up online to get the hangtag, then display the hangtag while parked in the garage overnight).
