The Law School Admission Test (LSAT)

The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is a half-day standardized test required for admission to all ABA-approved law schools. It provides a standard measure of acquired reading and verbal reasoning skills that law schools can use as one of several factors in assessing applicants.  The test is administered four times a year at hundreds of locations around the world.

Many law schools require that the LSAT be taken by December for admission the following fall. However, taking the test earlier -- in June or October -- is often advised.

PLEASE NOTE:
Almost all LSAC-member law schools in the United States will also require that you subscribe to the Law School Data Assembly Service (LSDAS). To find out if you are required to register for LSDAS, see LSDAS Candidate Requirements.

The registration fee for the LSAT is $127. Late registrants must pay an additional $64.

There is a 30-minute writing sample, which is administered at the end of the test. Copies of your writing sample is sent to all law schools to which you apply. It is not scored by LSAC. The score scale is 120-180.

The LSAT is designed to measure skills that are considered essential for success in law school: the reading and comprehension of complex texts with accuracy and insight; the organization and management of information and the ability to draw reasonable inferences from it; the ability to think critically; and the analysis and evaluation of the reasoning and arguments of others.
