College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) is a credit-by-examination program that permits students to earn credits for general introductory courses and move on to course work for their major and prospective career. Students who successfully pass CLEP tests can save time and tuition dollars during their college careers. CLEP offers thirty-five (35) examinations. For a complete up-to-date list, please contact the Office of Testing at 973-720-2570 or refer to the registration-admission form. All CLEP examinations are computer-based and most CLEP tests require 90 minutes to complete. However, some of the subject tests include an optional essay, and those tests require an additional 90 minutes. The candidate is required to pay an additional fee of $10 for these essays. Examination periods are scheduled periodically throughout the year. The complete schedule for each semester is available from the office and on this page below. The examinations cost $70 payable to CLEP and a non-refundable test center administration fee of $25 payable to William Paterson University. To obtain a Credit Card Payment Form please click the above named link. Alternatively, you may click on the "Register Online" link above and submit your registration information on our secure website. There are no limits on the number of tests that can be taken, and they may be retaken six months after the original testing date. There are, however, limits on the number of tests given on a particular day or within a given month. Since college credit-granting policies vary, it is recommended that prior to taking a CLEP test, students contact their institution to obtain a list of course credit allocations for CLEP exams. To view William Paterson University policies please click for General Exams or click for Subject Exams. Scoring is done by the Educational Testing Service
(ETS). An official score report will be sent to your receiving institution
by ETS two to four weeks after the test date. At the time you take the
exam, you can indicate the college, employer, or certifying agency that
you want to receive your CLEP test scores. There is no additional cost
for this service -- your exam fee covers it. At the end of the session,
you will receive a copy of your score report, with the exception of English
Composition with Essay. English Composition with Essay scores will be
sent to the candidate and their receiving institution two to four weeks
from the test date. If you haven't decided by the time you take the test
which institution you want to receive your scores, leave that item blank.
Test scores are kept on file for 20 years, so you can request that your
Score Report be sent to an institution at a later date. The fee for this
reporting service is $20. If you have any
additional questions or concerns, you may contact the Office of Testing
