VALE Executive Committee
Minutes of the October 13, 2004 Meeting
Present: J. Avrin, A. Ciliberti, J. Cohn, C. Daze, J. Getaz, J. Crocker, J. Jeney, D. Pinto, R. Sweeney
- Judy Cohn convened the meeting and the minutes from the September 8, 2004 meeting were approved.
- Anne Ciliberti distributed an October budget report and a revised September report. Over $1.4 million in receipts from member libraries have been received and vendor invoices are being paid. Several vendor invoices have still not been
received.
- Judy Cohn provided an update on the Knowledge Initiative (KI). Forty-eight VALE libraries have signed the Statement of Intent agreeing to participate. The Memorandum of Understanding has been approved by the State Library. Nine vendor proposals have been submitted in response to the RFQs and the negotiating group will meet on October 18th to review
them.
Twenty-five members were present at the September 24th Council meeting. The agenda included substantial discussion about the KI. Copies of the Memorandum of Understanding and invitations to the October 26th reception were distributed. Efforts will be made to reach out to non-library faculty and administrators to attend the reception.
It is important to quickly create a web site providing trial access to the databases. Authentication will be through NJ Clicks and Judy Cohn has relayed all VALE IP ranges to the State Library. A web site to provide updates on the KI needs to be developed. It is urgent that VALE members are kept informed and the Executive Committee will stress to the State Library the urgency of establishing a public web site.
- Committee Reports:
- Assessment Committee - Bro. Paul Chervenie was presented with a resolution at the
September 24th Council meeting thanking him for his contributions and leadership to the committee.

October 28th.
- Electronic Resources Committee - Judy Cohn reported the committee met on September 28th at
Seton Hall. Recommendations that have been submitted through the online form have been for specialized databases.
In order to determine the level of interest on the part of other VALE libraries, the committee would like to post a survey. Richard
Kearney will work with Dave Hoover to utilize a survey instrument he has. The committee will do a breakout session at the Users'
Conference.
- Interface Committee - A new chair is still needed.
- Publicity Committee - Joan Getaz distributed the new VALE flyer. Each library will be given 50 flyers and it will be made
available in pdf format on the VALE web site. Copies were also distributed at the NJ Edge conference held earlier.
Proposals for the Users' Conference poster and breakout sessions are due October 15th. Robert Boynton of NYU
has been confirmed as keynoter and will speak on the "Tyranny of Copyright". Judy Avrin will contact vendors for conference
donations. Judy Cohn will invite Norma Blake to the conference.

presented. She reported that the group met following the last Council meeting and will have a program at the Users'
Conference.

survey to determine training needs and priorities and to recruit facilities for sessions.
