Welcome Letter from the Coordinator of User Education

Fall 2007

Dear Faculty Member,

Welcome back! As the planning for the semester is underway, I would like to remind you of the value of scheduling a course-related library instruction session for your students. Although the majority of our students are comfortable researching in an online environment, most are not aware of the Library’s varied and diverse resources and rely too heavily on web resources that may not be appropriate for college level research. Technology has made the research process easier, but it has also increased the amount of information that is readily available and students need to develop skills in order to effectively locate, evaluate and use information in the most efficient manner.

Librarians in the User Education program are available to demonstrate appropriate resources and discuss the scholarly research process with your students. In addition, each session can be customized to meet the needs of your current assignment and provide students with the opportunity to practice hands-on during the session. To be most effective, library instruction should be scheduled as closely as possible to the time your students start working on their assignment. In addition to course-related instruction, our User Education program offers workshops on various resources and topics. During E-Week, September 9th through the 15th, we offer a variety of workshops highlighting new resources. Many additional workshops are also offered throughout the Fall semester.

The Library User Education Classroom (L01) will remain the primary location for instruction, although arrangements can be made to schedule classes in a Valley Road computer lab. We invite you to schedule your library instruction sessions early to ensure the date and time you desire. Last year, librarians provided more than 300 library sessions for students at all program levels. To schedule a class, please contact me at ext. 2161 or by email at weinern@wpunj.edu. You will receive confirmation regarding your date, time and room for all requests.

We look forward to working with you during the semester and invite you, and your students, to explore, connect and learn at the Cheng Library.

Regards,
