Two Important Business Sources Now Available in Electronic Formats...and the Welcome Return of the Wall Street Journal Online
The Library has recently acquired the Simmons Market Research Bureau's "National Consumer Survey" for the Year 2000 in CD-ROM format. The survey, previously available in print as the "Simmons Study of Media and Markets," provides data from over 20,000 adults and describes a wide variety of demographic and lifestyle descriptors, product categories and brands, and media usage. A powerful search and analysis tool called Choices 3, available in the Library's Electronic Resource Center, makes it possible to query the data and build a wide range of customized reports.

The online version of Dun & Bradstreet's Key Business Ratios, available in print as Industry Norms & Key Business Ratios, offers useful tools for comparing business performance against other firms or an entire industry. Taking its data from the financial statements of U.S. corporations, partnerships and proprietorships, Key Business Ratios provides a fast and easy way to calculate 14 important measures for business solvency, efficiency and profitability. Create reports for industries using Standard Industrial Classification codes and compare companies within an industry based on asset ranges. The data from the reports can be printed or exported.

Last but not least, the full text of the Wall Street Journal (Eastern Edition) is once again available online through the ABI/Inform database. Full-text coverage extends back to January 1984, with citations and abstracts available back to January 1982.

Two Important Online Indexes Provide Access to Journal Literature in Physics
The Library's recently updated Physics Resources page features a number of journal literature indexes and preprint sites. Among these are the American Physical Society's Physical Review Online Archive Abstracts Database (PROLA) and the American Institute of Physics' Searchable Physics Information Notices Abstracts Database (SPIN). PROLA's search engine provides citations and abstracts for all APS journal content back to 1893. In addition to the Physical Review, the database also indexes Physical Review Letters back to 1958, and Reviews of Modern Physics back to 1929. The SPIN database provides current indexing and abstracting of major American and Russian physics and astronomy journals. SPIN contains abstracts for over 80 scientific journals published by the American Institute of Physics and its Member Societies since 1975, plus selected articles from other scientific journals, totaling close to 1 million articles. Full-text articles for records located in either database can be requested through the Library's Interlibrary Loan service.

Major Multivolume Reference Encyclopedia for the Social Sciences Now Online through ScienceDirect
First published in 26 print volumes in 2001, the International Encyclopedia of the Social and Behavioral Sciences is the most current and comprehensive reference work for the social sciences. Over 3,800 articles cover the central subject disciplines of anthropology, economics, political science, psychology, and sociology, plus a wide range of related fields bearing on theory, research, methodological issues, and applications. The electronic version, which can be searched or browsed, is available through the Science Direct database. This is a valuable resource for every social science student.

Career Guidance Center in Facts On File Database Provides a One-Stop Research Center
Through its acquisition of the major career education publisher Ferguson, Facts On File now offers a vastly enhanced online Career Guidance Center. The easy-to-use interface includes several ways to browse and search a substantial amount of useful information, including detailed job descriptions and profiles, industry resources for job information, scholarship information, academic and non-academic opportunities for vocational education and training, an employee skills assessment, and numerous web resources. There are now more than 1,500 career profiles and 23,000 career resources in the Career Guidance Center database.

Reminder to Faculty: Virtual Private Network Software is Available for Loan from the Library
Recent changes in the "WP Online" service have placed several important resources behind secure network firewalls. These resources include administrative tools (e.g., time sheets and deposit stubs, the student information system, etc.) and other protected services. While on-campus access to these resources is now available through a convenient password-protected web portal, off-campus access requires that faculty establish a "virtual" connection to the WPUNJ network in addition to using their personal passwords. The essential tool for doing this is the Virtual Private Network software provided by University Information Services and available for loan from the Library. The software, called VPNKIT, is available in CD-ROM format and can be borrowed from the Library's Electronic Resource Center located behind the Reference Desk. The software must be installed and configured on home computers. Complete instructions for installation and configuration, along with detailed advice about using the software with specific types of internet service, are available online. Technical support is also available; questions should be emailed to vpnhelp@wpunj.edu.
