Library reorganization a reality
After several years and many staff discussions on what the appropriate
organization for the Library should be in our ever-changing technological environment, the Library has restructured its various departments into two major divisions, along with two critically important support units – all reporting to the Director of Library Services.
The two major units are: Access and Information Services with Kathy Malanga as Assistant Director; and Resource Management where the Library will welcome a new Assistant Director, Judy Jeng. Included under AIS are Reference & Information, Research Support, User Education, Publications, Circulation, Reserves, Stack Maintenance, Duplication Services, and Evening and Weekend Services. Resource Management includes Bibliographic control, Acquisitions, Periodicals, Serials, Document Delivery and Interlibrary Loan.
The two other major areas which support the services and collections of the
Library are Library Information Systems, headed by Maureen Riley and Collection
Development and Special Projects, headed by Anne Ciliberti. Media Services is now part of Instruction and Research Technology on the organization chart, but remains a vital part of our Library services and collections.
We feel that this has been a very positive step for the Library as a whole, and will provide opportunities for team building and growth within the newly created, larger units.
For the most part, our librarians, professional and support staff can still be found in their same locations, providing service to all our users.
Along with organizational change, there is a committment to continual
improvement of service at the Library. We have some new faces, new artwork, new
databases and information access systems on the horizon, and always new books. We welcome your comments and suggestions, and, of course, hope you become well
acquainted with our services and collections.

New Faces at the Library
Victoria Heenan
Victoria Heenan recently joined the staff of the Askew Library as the Access
Services Librarian. Victoria heads the Lending Services department which oversees the circulation of materials, reserves and copier services. Victoria hopes to increase access and services to the William Paterson community. This is an exciting time for the Lending Services department as it embarks upon some innovative and challenging
projects such as electronic reserves.
While studying for her Library Science degree at Rutgers University, she worked at Montclair Public Library, the College of St. Elizabeth’s Mahoney Library, and Rutgers University’s Alexander Library. She has also worked as a legal assistant for an intellectual property attorney, conducting research relative to patents, trademarks and
copyrights.
Victoria lived and studied in England for nearly three years and received an MA in Shakespeare Studies from the University of Birmingham’s Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-Upon-Avon, UK. While at the Shakespeare Institute she studied with members of the Royal Shakespeare Company as well as directing, producing and acting in productions of the Institute.
Originally from Alexandria, Virginia, Victoria resides in Montclair.
Charles Landy
Born in Palisades Park, NJ; educated at Cental Blvd. Elementary School,
Charlie’s earliest exposure to William Paterson University was through a social studies teacher, Mrs. Florence Pedersen, a graduate of Paterson Normal School. In 1967 she attended Charlie’s brother’s graduation party from Monmouth College in Long Branch, NJ. She made a great impression upon Charlie, who came to know her as a wonderful person and educator.
Charlie graduated from the then William Paterson College in 1971 with a BA in English and a secondary school teaching certificate. He found teaching jobs to be scarce, and found work with a commercial airline. He studied languages and ‘saw the world.’ Eventually the airline downsized and he became a home health caregiver and employee of Montville Township. Charlie’s application was on file with the WP Human Resources office, and when the Library Periodicals Department needed an Evening Supervisor, Charlie was hired.
N. Maurice Vacca
Maurice Vacca is a recent graduate of William Paterson University, with a
BA in Communication. He is the Library’s new evening and weekend Supervisor ,
primarily working in Lending Services. His previous experience in education includes three years in the Glen Ridge Public Schools where he served as an aide and substitute teacher.
Prior to teaching, Maurice worked in management in the private sector,
and for three years owned a sucessful delicatessen. Maurice is married, lives in
Bloomfield, NJ, and plans to continue his education at William Paterson University.
Library Outreach Project
Volunteers from the Library staff will be cataloging approximately 600 books as a special outreach program with the Eastside High School in Paterson. The staff members will be spending part of their lunch hours, and after hours, etc. inputing cataloging records via the internet into the online catalog at the high school.
The project originated from a visit by Amy Job, Library Cataloging Coordinator to the newly refurbished library at the school. A special effort to place a backlog of new books in the catalog was initiated to help students in their research efforts in reponse to the
newly instituted New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards.
The project is viewed by the Library and the High School administration as an excellent example of of the cooperation that can be achieved through William Paterson's Outreach Program.
Adaptive technology available in Library
The David & Lorraine Cheng Library recognizes that individuals with disabilities may need special assistance in accessing library services and materials. To accommodate such requests for assistance, a reference librarian will act as ombudsman for coordinating and expediting assistance with reference service, photocopying, retrieving materials and mail deliveries.
Arrangements for these services can be made by calling the Reference Desk at 973-720-2116. A librarian will return the call within 24 business hours. Since it is difficult to anticipate specific requests, patrons are encouraged to call in advance if special assistance is needed. The Library will work directly with the University’s Office of Disability Services 973-720-2218 to develop
other accommodations. New students, faculty and staff are encouraged to contact both the Library Reference Department and the Office of Disability Services in advance of their arrival on campus if special library accommodations are needed.
Examples of Services:
Circulation of Materials and Photocopy Assistance
Individuals with disabilities can make arrangements to have circulating library materials delivered on campus or mailed. Lending Services staff will also assist individuals with the retrieval of materials from both the circulating and reserve collections, and photocopying. Periodicals Department staff will assist in the retrieval of magazines, newspapers and journals
and will provide photocopy assistance for all formats (paper, fiche and film). A wheelchair-accessible photocopier is available in
the Periodicals Department. Most library photocopiers can make enlarged copies of documents.
Reference Service
Reference staff provide individualized reference and research assistance by appointment, via e-mail and, in person, at the reference desk. Reference staff will assist in the use of the Library’s Online Catalog and electronic reference databases. A copy of all library brochures and instructional handouts can be provided on disk upon request and many are already accessible on the
Library Webpage.
Adaptive Technology
The following equipment is available for use by individuals with disabilities:
An Optelec video magnification system is located in the Periodicals Department. The magnification is approximately 4x
to 100x.
A Kurzweil/Omni 1000 reading scanning workstation for individuals with visual impairments is located in the Adaptive
Technology Room, Room 105, in the Reference Department. Users must register at the Reference Desk.
A Kurzweil Omni 3000 reading scanning workstation for individuals with learning disabilities is located in the
Adaptive Technology Room, Room 105, in the Reference Department. Users must register at the Reference Desk.
The Omni 3000 software is also available in the Atrium
Although these resources are primarily for the use of William Paterson students, faculty and staff, other individuals with
disabilities may make arrangements by contacting the Reference Desk.

"Reveal" brings tables of contents to your e-mail
UnCover Reveal is an automated alerting service for faculty that delivers the table of contents of your favorite periodicals directly to your e-mail box. The Reveal service also allows users to create search strategies for their favorite topics. These search strategies are then run against the entire UnCover database and weekly alerts on the latest articles published on the specified topics are also delivered to the user's e-mail address. In both cases, after viewing the e-mailed alerts, the user can selectively order and pay for
individual articles from UnCover by sending reply e-mail or printing the page and faxing the order to UnCover. The Library invites you to try REVEAL now.
