VPN
General Information:
- New: AOL
6.0 also does not function properly with the VPN clients. Please
see new information below.
- New: Click
Here to see some of the Messages the VPN might produce and
what they mean.
- New: Many
VPN users who have updated to AOL 6.0 and AOL 5.0 are having problems
using the VPN. We are currently researching this issue and have
found that in some cases the VPN Client does NOT work with AOL
6.0 nor AOL 5.0. The VPN client still works with AOL 4.0, and since
America Online does permit you to have multiple copies of AOL packages
installed, you can keep, (install AOL 6.0 or AOL 5.0 without overwriting
AOL 4.0), or reinstall AOL 4.0 (if you have already removed it).
We have tested and found that both AOL 4.0 and AOL 5.0 can co-exist
on the same machine, and AOL 4.0 when installed in this manner
still supports the VPN Client.
- New: XP users - answer YES to the digital signature question.
- Those
considering DSL. Standard DSL configurations use a
connection method called IP hosting. The DSL connection device
has a real IP address. The computer(s) are then connected to
a LAN using a locally defined set of IP addresses. The DSL
device hosts these local addresses on the Internet permitting
access. The use of a VPN client in this configuration is not
necessarily supported. The DSL provider must provision the
DSL connection device to support a VPN session using IPSec
protocols. If you intend to use WPUNJ's VPN service with a
DSL provider please verify that the provide will support the
service.
- During the Extranet software
installation, you may be told that there are too many TCP/IP protocols
bound to the Dial-up networking adapter. This usually happens if
you have both a LAN card and and Modem, and have installed AOL
or Compuserve with ISP support. You must delete one of the TCP/IP
bindings to install VPN. This is a Microsoft restriction.
- The Extranet Client comes
with an auto-dialer. We recommend you continue to use the dail-up
method provided by your ISP. The installed auto-dailer is not supported
by WPUNJ, if you choose to use it, WPUNJ will not be able to provide
technical assistance.
- If you are using Windows
98 or Windows NT you must have Microsoft Dial-Up networking or
Microsoft RAS installed. DO NOT install the Winsocket Update or
MS DUN 1.3. These updates are not needed for Windows NT or Windows
98 and can cause your dial-up connection to not function correctly.
- VPN does not replace your
ISP connectivity, it is intended only so your can access secure
resources.
- While VPN is active your
are still connected using your ISP profile. This means you MUST
fully qualify your WPUNJ system names, including the wpunj.edu domain name. You must use SYSTEM-NAME.wpunj.edu to contact systems at WPU. For
example, use www.wpunj.edu, when contacting www.
- The VPN server authenticates
using Windows NT/Email usernames and passwords ONLY. Faculty, staff
and students users must have a valid WPUNJ Windows NT/Email account
to use the VPN services.
To install the VPN software
just run these programs as shown below. Depending on the configuration
of your computer you may be asked to restart Windows after each step.
Because of this we suggest to print these directions and follow them
step by step.
