Network Extension Policy

(includes Wireless Networking)

Any and all network technologies are subject to University Information Technology policies and guidelines found at: http://www.wpunj.edu/itservices/policies/.

Summary

Because it is the responsibility of the William Paterson University Information Technology department to provide security, ensure appropriate use, and allocate access to network resources and bandwidth in an equitable manner to the University community, it has laid out several guidelines to help users understand the specifics regarding connecting devices to the network.

Only network extension devices (including devices such as hubs, switches, routers, and wireless access points) installed and managed by William Paterson University Information Technology will be allowed for use on the University network. University faculty and staff are not permitted to install their own network extension equipment. Departments wishing to extend their network connectivity or implement wireless networking should contact the Information Technology department.

Residence Halls

One network port per student is provided in residence hall rooms. This is sufficient for connecting to the network one computer or network device at a time. Any other network device beside the one authorized can interfere with the Residence Hall network registration system and network service may be disrupted. (Students may not extend the network by connecting routers or wireless access points in their residence hall rooms.)

William Paterson University reserves the right to request the removal of any network extension devices at any time.
