What's new for faculty Fall 2011

Welcome back (or welcome for the first time) to the Fall 2011 semester!

In an attempt to proactively alleviate the common issues encountered at the beginning of each semester, Information Systems would like to bring a few things to your attention.

Campus Wireless Access

Campus wireless coverage has been expanded over the summer and will continue to grow.  To see current information on WPUNJ Wireless coverage, please our Wireless Coverage Areas site. Additionally, our Internet bandwidth has been upgraded with a second 500Mbits line providing full Internet redundancy, this translates to no Internet interruptions.

Alert Notice:
Campus community members utilizing the WPUNJ wireless network will find that a Cisco NAC agent (formerly known as Clean Access) upgrade is required to access the WPUNJ wireless network.  While the upgrade process is fairly straightforward, those encountering issues can contact the Helpdesk at Help@wpunj.edu or 973.720.HELP (4357) for assistance.

Microsoft Office 2010 Upgrades

University computers will be updated from Microsoft Office 2007 to  Office 2010.  After thorough review and testing this upgrade should not have any compatibility concerns and minimum impact to users.  We will be staging upgrades based upon the below scenarios.

All new CRP PC’s that were scheduled for an upgrade starting August 2011 and forward will have Office 2010 installed by default.

Any existing Faculty or Staff member that doesn’t have a PC replaced by CRP can request an upgrade through the helpdesk.  After the Spring 2012 semester it will be recommended that any remaining Office 2007 users be upgraded to Office 2010.

Student public labs in the Library and Atrium will be installed before the Fall 2011 semester.  The reminder of the public labs will be done shortly after.

Please contact the helpdesk at x4357 or help@wpunj.edu to request an upgrade.

Network data storage

We have recently identified a significant increase in personal multimedia files (music, pictures, videos) being stored on University network drives (the K:\ and U:\ drives).  Please be aware that this constitutes improper use as documented in the WPUNJ IT Appropriate Use Policy and also has significant implications on both performance and cost of University equipment.  If you are storing personal multimedia files on University equipment, we strongly advise on moving the offending files to personal computer equipment.

WPconnect

WPconnect serves as the main entry point to many of WPUNJ’s online services.   During the first few days of prior semesters we have experienced extremely high volumes of access to WPconnect which has resulted in slowdowns for WPconnect.  We’ll take this opportunity to inform you of alternate access methods to a few critical online services in the event that WPconnect experiences performance issues during the next week.

WPUNJ Accounts - Change your password!

Your WPUNJ account is the key to your William Paterson online profile and as such we recommend that all members of our University community maintain a strong password on their account.  A strong password contains at least 8 characters with a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and special characters.  We have added a new feature to WPconnect that allows for easier access to changing your password.  Please see the “Change Password” channel found on the main tab of WPconnect.  Any individual encountering issues with their WPUNJ account should contact the Helpdesk at 973.720.HELP (4357) or Help@wpunj.edu.

Upcoming Initiatives

Two initiatives of note that will be coming online during the 2010-2011 academic year are a new WPconnect and new Helpdesk self-service support website.   A new upgraded WPconnect will be brought online during the fall semester to provide improved performance to the increasing WPUNJ community. The new self-service Helpdesk site will be introduced at the end of this year and will allow an improved Helpdesk experience including self-service entry and update of support tickets. Look for additional information regarding both of these upcoming initiatives and others during the semester.

We value your feedback.  Please feel free to contact the Helpdesk at Help@wpunj.edu or 973.720.HELP (4357) with any questions, comments, or suggestions.

Thank you and best wishes on an enjoyable, successful semester.
