Academic Technology (Top)


Academic Technology provides service for faculty and students with instructional design, supports the student labs, assists with academic webspace, and administrates instructional software.

  • Instructional Technology - Trained and experienced Instructional Technologists are available to help integrate technology into your courses and research
  • Student Technology Consultants (STCs) - Specially trained in hardware, software, and consultation skills staff the student labs, design and produce digital media, and offer free software workshops to the University community
  • Academic Webspace - The Instructional Technologists and STCs are available to help the university community design and mount department, course-based, and personal academic webpages; multimedia and graphics expertise is combined with a sophisticated understanding of the Internet to provide you with professional advice
  • Instructional Software - Administers all instructional software, including Blackboard and Listservs; create and implement courses in both the distance learning and hybrid (regular classwork augmented with online interaction) environments.
Broadcast, Production and Support (BPS) (Top)

Broadcast, Production and Support assists in the design, creation and operation of audio and video systems and facilities for the William Paterson University community. Under its four service areas, Audio Operations, Film & Video Operations, Cable Television Operations and Videoconferencing and Satellite Operations, the staff provides professional expertise and service to support the academic programs across campus.

Audio Operations (Top)


A team of professional audio engineers and technicians can record and produce digitally mastered CDs as well as other customized audio using digital editing workstations. Services include remote live recordings of special events to original music production. Some of the facilities that Audio Operations assists with are:

  • Shea Center for the Performing Arts
  • Center for Electroacoustic Music
  • Audio production studios in Hobart Hall
  • Broadcast radio station WPSC-FM and cable radio station WCRN
  • Recreation Center public address systems
Film and Video Operations (Top)

IRT's team of professionals supports the operations and maintenance of the following production facilities:
  • Television Studios A and B in Hobart Hall are each equipped with three-cameras, and a fourth can be added as needed. The very large Studio A contains a full sized three-sided cyclorama. Production is done on a state-of-the-art digital videotape format and enhanced with digital graphic generators and special effects systems.
  • Remote production truck is a complete broadcast quality mobile studio. When used with the portable satellite uplink dish, it can provide nationwide satellite television coverage.
  • Linear and non-linear editing suites are available for a wide range of applications. They include straight cut and A/B roll systems for linear editing and Media 100, Final Cut Pro and Avid workstations for non-linear editing. We support DVCPRO, MiniDV, Betacam-SP, U-Matic, Hi-8, S-VHS and VHS tape formats as both source and record.
  • Film production facilities, including a studio, film editing and splicing rooms, a film screening room and a film to video conversion system.
  • Equipment distribution for student and faculty use in academic projects and classes.
Videoconferencing and Satellite Operations (Top)

We also offer both downlink and uplink capabilities. Our Ku Band satellite transmission facility is available to transmit full broadcast, compressed video/audio and data to both domestic and international satellites. Reception is available for both C and Ku band broadcasts and can be viewed throughout campus or delivered to your location via fiber or coaxial cable.

Our Portable Satellite Dish is used for mobile telecommunication requirements and can travel in our production van to any location.

One unique facility that can be used for Satellite and Video Conferencing is the Nicholas Martini Teleconference Center. This state-of-the-art facility with remote controlled cameras was designed and built to provide large audience interactive teleconferencing in an auditorium setting. With seats for 100 people and special soundproofing, lighting, and THX-certified surround sound system, the Martini Center is an auditorium that can fulfill almost any conferencing experience.

Cable TV (Top)

IRT provides over 60 cable channels including news, entertainment, sports, education and the William Paterson Broadcast Network. Content for the WPBN channels are provided by campus units, departments and selected programming services. Through these select channels, WPBN-TV channel 6 and WCRN channel 14, innovative programming, music and live campus news and sports is broadcast to the campus community 24 hours a day. The cable lineup is available on WCRN channel 14 or through our website.

Media Services (Top)


Located on the first floor of the David and Lorraine Cheng Library, Media Services plans and implements the acquisition and dissemination of media technologies including both audiovisual materials and accompanying equipment to support the instructional programs of William Paterson University. The staff provides assistance in selecting, evaluating, locating and using software and hardware.

  • Houses & circulates a collection of over 17,000 audiovisual materials and accompanying equipment
  • Provides previewing & listening facilities
  • Assists in duplication of materials within copyright limitations
  • Maintains & delivers technology to academic classrooms
