Computer Assignment

Proceed to the Computer Lab, and request "Dynamic Encounters." The seven programs are designed to help students explore some important concepts and applications of sociology and to discover some of the built-in rules of social processes. The programs are easy to operate, and all instructions appear on the screen. You are to select two from the following list:

Bias High: Educational Inequality Board Game - "Bias High" presents an operating model of the problems of inequality in education, showing how underlying socioeconomic biases effect educational achievement. The goal of this board game is to complete high school. The player is randomly assigned race/ethnicity, gender, SES, etc. and sees how peer influence, family problems, romance, IQ tracking, etc. affect his/.her grade point average.

Cliques: Defining Social Groups and Subcultures - "Cliques" investigates the social world or high school. Students are asked questions that sharpen their awareness of the characteristics that typified the various groups in the social system they have recently left. Sociometric diagrams of interrelationships among groups are presented. Students are led to explore social prestige, deviance labels, and sociometric interconnections that shape attitudes and values in their recent experience.

Each "board game" is to be completed and print-outs made and submitted for assignment.

Assignment is to include a summary of your participation and outcome of each simulation game for you. No more than two typed sheets for each student is allowed. Due Date:_________________________
