    Figures Used to Express Numbers

    1. all numbers 10 and above except as noted below
    2. all numbers below 10 that are grouped for combination with numbers 10 and above
    3. numbers that immediately precede a unit of measurement
    4. numbers that represent statistical or mathematical functions, fractional or decimal quantities, percentages, ratios and percentiles
    5. numbers that represent time, dates, ages, exact sums of money, numerals as numerals, scores and points on a scale
    6. numbers that denote specific place in a numbered series, parts of books and tables, and each number in a list of four or more numbers
    7. all numbers in the abstract of a paper

    Numbers Expressed in Words

    1. numbers below 10 that do not represent precise measurements and that are grouped for comparison with numbers below 10
    2. numbers zero and one when the words would be easier to comprehend than the figures or when the words do not appear in the context with numbers 10 and above
    3. any number that begins a sentence, title or heading
    4. common fractions
    5. universally accepted usage

    Combining Figures and Words to Express Numbers

    1. round large numbers starting with a million
    2. back-to-back modifiers

    Ordinal Numbers: (First, Second, Third etc.)

    1. treat the same way as cardinal numbers (one, two three etc.)
