The goal in this course is to explore different modes of writingthat you will need to master in order to enhance your success in collegeas well as develop links between writing and other academic areas suchas History, Sociology, Philosophy, Geography, Politics, Statistics etc.using the case study approach.

The case studies in the reading text will allow you to examine 6 issuesfrom various points of view. Included in the cases studies are positionstatements from various people involved in the issue as well as historicaldocuments. This will allow you to draw from a rich set of source materialin your writing. Most of the cases deal with historical foundations ofissues such as the debates over race relations, the role of women in society, acculturation, and the relationship of labor and capital that have notbeen completely resolved to this day. By examining the historical rootspresent day contentions, you will be able to understand the source of currentconflicts and thus develop a coherent approach to these topics in yourwriting.
