After Installing System 8
or 8.1 Software, or recieving a new computer with either of these loaded
onto it, you will eventually want to configure your Macintosh for connecting
to the internet. These instructions will guide you through this process.
Fortunately, Macintosh System 8 and above virtually do it for you. All
you have to do is enter the correct information.
|
 |
- The first step
is to locate the Internet Setup Assistant. This item should
be in the Macintosh HD "Assistants" folder.
- If you cannot find
it, Search for it using "Find File" in either the
"File" or "Apple" Menus.
- Open the Internet
Setup Assistant.
|
- The "Introduction"
window
- It will ask you if
you want to register with a new ISP or update. Choose "Update".
- Read the information
that comes up. All of the information that the Internet Setup
Assistant asks for is provided on this page.
- The "Internet Configuration"
window
- Select "Add
an Internet Configuration".
- The "Configuration
name and Connection type" window
- Name the configuartion:
Wpnet
- Since this page is
for connecting to "Wpnet" from a modem connection, select
"Modem" at the bottom of the window. If you are attemptimg
to connect over a network, consult your Network Administrator.
- The "Modem Settings"
window
- You must select the
type of modem you are using. See the documentation that came with
your modem. Usually any README files in the modem software will
have the type of modem to select in this step.
- Next, choose the
port that your modem is connected to. If it is an internal modem,
select "Modem Port" from the drag down menu. If you
are not sure which port your modem is connected to, look at where
it is connected on the back of the computer and consult the manual
that came with your Macintosh. Usually, the "Modem Port"
will do.
- Next, select the
type of phone line you are using. In most cases, "Tone"
will do. If you are not sure what type of phone line you are using,
contact your phone company.
- The "Connection
Information" window
- The phone number
for this connection is 595-3536. Out of area dialers will need
to use this number: 1-973-595-3536.
- Next, enter the login
name that you recieved. If you need this information, you must
go to the Atrium Printer Room, #122. You will this information
to continue.
- Next, you must enter
your password that you received with your login name. Yo do not
have to enter this password. If you do not however, you must enter
it every time you wish to connect. this is usefull if you wish
to restrict access to this connection.
- The "IP Adress"
window
- Your Wpnet connection
does not assign you an ip adress so select "No".
- The "Domain Name
Servers" window
- The DNS adress is
149.151.1.9 (enter this number exactly, including decimals!)
- The DNS adress is:
wpunj.edu
- The "Email adress
and password" window (This step is not neccesary)
- There is no reason
to enter this information.
- The "Email account
and Host Computer" window
- Wpnet does not provide
this service, so skip this step. If you wish to recieve email,
you must get a terminal program like NCSA telnet or BetterTelnetFat
or use your internet web browser (netscape or internter Explorer)
or an email program like Eudora or Claris Emailer.
- The "Newsgroup
Host Computer" window
- Wpnet does not offer
Newsgroup services so skip this step.
- You are now done configuring
the Wpnet Comkit for Macintosh System 8 and up. You can choose to
connect from the Internet Setup Assistant when it finishes updating
your configuration, or you can choose to add another configuration.
