Resource People This is the very small
beginning of a list that we hope will grow into a useful resource for
members of the William Paterson community. It will include teachers of
courses related to the Project, steering committee members, and other
friends of the Project who might be able to offer advice of some kind to
instructors and others.
Sharmila Pixy Ferris (PhD, 1995, The Pennsylania State University) is
Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at William Paterson
University, where she also serves as Program Director for the Media Studies
graduate program. Her research focuses on various aspects of computer-mediated
communication - from the user-technology interface to gender issues to
orality and literacy. She has recently published a book entitled Beyond
Survival in the Academy (Hampton Press), and has an upcoming co-edited
book Virtual and Collaborative Teams: Process, Technologies and Practice
(Idea Group). She has also published in a variety of journals. At
William Paterson University, Dr. Ferris has taught Women's Changing Roles,
Ecofeminism, and Gender, Language and Communication.
Arlene Holpp Scala Dr. Arlene Holpp Scala is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Women's
Studies Department. She earned her doctorate (Ed.D.) at Columbia University
in the Teaching of Reading and Writing with a Concentration in Peace Education.
Her dissertation is titled Heterosexism in the Classroom: A Teaching
Case Study. Her research interests include pedagogical issues, heterosexism,
lesbian issues, and popular culture. She is currently collecting data
on student memories of Barbie. She is also working on an article titled
"Teaching Bastard Out of Carolina Through Jane Caputi's Pop
Culture Lens." She has been published in Transformations: The
New Jersey Project Journal; Solutions for the New Millennium: Race
Class, and Gender; Radical Teacher: A Socialist and Feminist Journal
on the Theory and Practice of Teaching; NWSAction; and; Desire
in Transition (forthcoming 2005). She teaches "Racism and Sexism
in the U.S.," "Women's Changing Roles," "Contemporary
Feminist Issues," "Women's Studies Capstone," "Lesbian
Issues," "Sex Equity in Education," and "Images of
Women in Modern Literature." She is a teacher-researcher and an activist.
Carole J. Sheffield earned her Ph.D. from Miami University of Ohio in
1973. She is an expert on violence against women, and her scholarly articles
have been published in major textbooks in the field. Her work on obscene
phone calls was featured in the popular media, including Mademoiselle,
Glamour, Woman's Day, and The Ladies Home Journal.
She has appeared on a number of television programs, including "The Today
Show." Professor Sheffield teaches in both the Department of Political
Science and the Department of Women's Studies. Her areas of expertise
include sexual terrorism, feminist theory, political socialization, and
race and gender studies. Her outstanding teaching has been recognized
by The Carnegie Foundation, which named her "The New Jersey Professor
of the Year" for 1997-98, and by The American Political Science Association
and Pi Sigma Alpha (the national honor society in political science).
Professor Sheffield is a teacher/scholar/activist. |
