2005 Summer Institute [see below] Summer Institute 2003 in Cuernavaca, Mexico
NEW JERSEY PROJECT 2005 SUMMER INSTITUTE CROSSING BORDERS: MULTICULTURAL CURRICULUM TRANSFORMATION MAY 26, 2005 – JUNE 4, 2005, CUERNAVACA, MEXICO Designed to prepare participants to carry out multicultural curriculum transformation in global perspective, this ten-day travel seminar will familiarize faculty with some of the most pressing economic, political, and cultural issues that are impacting the lives of women and men around the globe. By examining the nature of globalization and its impact on Mexico and the Americas, educators will return home with a deeper understanding of the complex relations that characterize life in the global village and will be better able to help their students both understand these relationships and think critically about them. By “crossing borders”—geographical, intellectual, and emotional—participants will have an opportunity to bring new perspectives to their own work as educators and to the curriculum they teach. Upon returning home, educators should have a deeper understanding of how to prepare students for responsible global citizenship in the 21st century. They will receive insights into how to integrate global perspectives into the curriculum in their field and at their institution. This experience will assist educators to explore the relationship of education to social justice issues, then to advocate and direct curriculum transformation projects in a broad array of academic disciplines. This travel seminal will be based in Cuernavaca, about an hour south of Mexico City. This “city of eternal spring” is noted for its beautiful climate and gentle spirit. The style of this travel seminar is experiential. Each day will include field trips and opportunities for interaction with people from a diverse cross-section of Mexican society. Who is eligible to participate: registration is open to faculty, staff, and administrators at colleges and universities both in and outside of New Jersey. Cost: a registration fee of $875 per participant will cover all lodging, meals, ground transportation, and program expenses except airfare. As a benefit of their Institutional Partnership status with the New Jersey Project, institutional sponsors will be able to send faculty to the Institute at a reduced registration fee of $675 per registrant. Institutional supporters will be eligible for a reduced fee of $775 per registrant. (New Jersey educators: please see list of partnership institutions on Institutional Partners link.) The New Jersey Project will do its best to help participants secure reasonably priced air travel to and from Mexico.
