Insula-Caribbean is a decentralized unit of INSULA, which is an international non-governmental organization based at UNESCO, Paris devoted to island affairs. Insula-Caribbean was founded in 1996 to give particular attention to sustainable development issues of the Caribbean islands and the coastal areas of the Americas.

Insula-Caribbean has the following specific objectives:

  • to organize, promote and implement scientific, technical and cultural activities in favour of the sustainable development of islands in the Caribbean, giving particular attention to sustainable development of tourism, agriculture and industry; coastal zone, fresh water and waste management, integrated environmental planning and resource use, human resource development; climate change and disaster management;

  • to promote and disseminate information, best practices and experiences relating to these problems, through meetings, conferences, publications and its Listserv;

  • to help develop and strengthen multidisciplinary networks of researchers and practitioners concerned with these issues.

Membership of Insula-Caribbean is open to specialists, researchers from various disciplines, administrators and institutions concerned with the sustainable development of the Caribbean islands and coastal regions of the Americas.
