THE RED VIOLIN

In present day Montreal, a famous Nicolo Bussotti violin, known as "the red violin," is up for auction. During the auction, we flash back to the creation of the violin in 17th century Italy, and follow its journey through an 18th century Austrian monastery, to a violinist in 19th century Oxford, to China during the Cultural Revolution, and back to Montreal, where a collector tries to establish the identity and the secrets of "the red violin." (Canada/U.K./Italy. Directed by François Girard, 1998, 131 minutes. French/English/Italian/Mandarin/German).

PAKEEZAH

This film is about Nargis, a woman brought up by brothel madame Nawabjaan. Unable to break away from the vicious circle, Nargis grows up and becomes a beautiful and popular dancer/singer Sahibjaan. Aristocratic Salim Ahmed Khan is enthralled by Sahibjaan's beauty and innocence, renames her Pakeezah (“Pure of Heart”) and eventually convinces her to elope with him. But trials and tribulations await Sahibjaan as she is recognized by men wherever she goes in the company of Salim… ( India. Directed by Kamal Amrohi, 1971, 126 minutes. Urdu).

TOUS LES MATINS DU MONDE (EVERY MORNING OF THE WORLD)

In the late 17th century, viola virtuoso Monsieur de Sainte Colombe comes home to find that his wife died while he was away. In his grief, he builds a small house in his garden into which he moves to dedicate his life to music and his two young daughters, Madeleine and Toinette, avoiding the outside world. Rumor about him and his music is widespread, and even reaches the court of Louis XIV, who wants him in Lully's orchestra. Monsieur de Sainte Colombe refuses. One day a young man, Marin Marais, comes to see him, wishing to become his student… ( France. Directed by Alain Corneau, 1991, 115 minutes. French).

Tues., Jan. 30th        -      12:30-2:30

JALSAGAR (THE MUSIC SALON)

Set in India, the film is about Biswambhar Roy, a zamindar (landlord), and the last of his kind. He has none of the perquisites that go with his title, inheriting diminishing lands that are being eroded by the neighboring river. But he must maintain the lifestyle of his heritage. This ostentation is most apparent in the grandest room of his mansion, the music room. Here he invites the finest musicians and dancers to perform before the area's most important commoners. His wife's entreaties to control spending are ignored, and a coming of age party he throws for his son brings him down to the last of the family jewels… ( India. Directed by Satyajit Ray, 1958, 95 minutes. Bengali).

TOGETHER

Xiaochun is a 13-year-old boy, a talented violinist who lives with his father in a small, provincial Chinese city. Shy and sensitive, music is his way of expressing his feelings. Xiaochun's sweet-natured father wants the best for him, so they move to immense, metropolitan Beijing so that Xiaochun can audition for a prestigious music school and take lessons that befit his talent. But Xiaochun's new world is unlike any he's known. He meets new and demanding teachers, discovers true friendship, falls in love for the first time, learns how painful love can be, and comes to understand the true meaning of music. With his world splitting in two and everyone telling him what they want for him, Xiaochun has to figure out what he wants for himself. ( China. Directed by Chen Kaige, 2003. Mandarin).

DE BATTRE MON COEUR S’EST ARRÊTÉ (THE BEAT THAT MY HEART SKIPPED)

Twenty-eight-year-old Tom leads a life that might be termed as criminal. In doing so, he follows in the footsteps of his father, who made his money from dirty, and sometimes brutal, real estate deals. Tom is a pretty hard-boiled guy but also strangely considerate as far as his father is concerned. Somehow he appears to have arrived at a critical juncture in his life when a chance encounter prompts him to take up the piano and become a concert pianist, like his mother. He senses that this might be his final opportunity to take back his life. ( France. Directed by Jacques Audiard. 2005. 107 minutes. French/Russian/English/Mandarin).
