Why Grandparents as Parents?

Grandparents have always played an important role in raising grandchildren. Today many grandparents are parenting a second time around. Caring for children whose parents are unable or unwilling to do so can be a source of great joy, but can also result in stressful byproducts to one’s personal life.

What is GAP?

GAP is a network of health and human service professionals, grandparents, agency representatives, and elected officials.

GAP calls for the establishment of a resource center and a resource directory to help grandparents locate services and resources.

The purpose of GAP is to identify the needs of non-parental adults raising children, recommend programs, identify public policy issues, and recommend legislative changes.

Grandparents and other kinship caregivers are encouraged to join GAP so that their concerns can be incorporated into GAP's initiatives.

Grandparents As Parents (GAP) of Passaic County is a project of the Institute for Creative Aging, William Paterson University, Wayne, NJ and Rutgers Cooperative Extension, Passaic County
