Fall 2009 Community Service Events

Coat Drive
The 4th Annual Coat Drive will be held this fall. The week of November 2, bins will be placed in the residence halls and the Honors College office in Raubinger. The final collection date will be Tuesday, November 10, during which we could use your help at a table on Main Street (outside the book store in the student center) collecting coats. The coats are then donated to Eva’s Village and the Passaic County Head Start. We hope to plan a day to go and drop off the coats, and maybe do an activity with the children at Head Start. Please pay attention to e-mails and flyers about the coat drive collection and drop-off information.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand and Bake Sale
Community Service Officer, Marisol Garcia, and Honors student Jess Pepe are hoping to plan Alex’s Lemonade Stand, which is an organization dedicated to fighting childhood cancer. They are hoping to have a bake sale in conjunction with the lemonade stand, and although the date has not yet been determined, they will need people to help by donating baked goods, volunteering at the table on Main Street and hopefully at Valley Road. Please look for e-mails and flyers with dates and times for the fundraising event, and please help by donating baked goods or your time.

Up ‘Til Dawn
Last year the Honors Club had a few Up ‘Til Dawn teams. This university wide fundraiser donates all the proceeds to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a research and treatment facility that helps children regardless of their parent’s ability to pay. The people on the teams participated in writing letters to family and friends asking for donations, having a bake sale on Main Street in the student center, and attending Up ‘Til Dawn’s Finale event. Teams have not yet been put together, but look for e-mails about how to sign-up if you are interested. It is a lot of fun and goes to a worthy cause.

Halloween-A-Palooza
Service fee to get in will be 2 canned goods to be donated to a local food bank or $3 to be donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. There will also be a raffle of which proceeds will also be donated to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

We hope to plan as many community service events to give back to our community, so if you want to help out or have an idea please don’t hesitate to contact the Honor Club’s Community Service Officer, Marisol Garcia.
