Graduate Program
The
Bilingual/ESL Graduate Program in the Department of Languages and
Cultures provides students with a rich range of experiences needed
to understand the ways in which language is learned and used in
diverse settings. Viewing language as an integral part of social
and cognitive development, we pay particular attention to the cultural
contexts and social situations in which it occurs.
The program prepares students for careers in bilingual education,
teaching English to speakers of other languages, consultation,
supervision, and research in educational linguistics. Academic
training is supplemented with practical experience through field
research and internship at neighboring school districts that offer
bilingual/ESL programs to language minority children. For further
information, please contact Dr.Bruce Williams, the program director,

History
Masters Program
The Masters of Arts in History is designed for the 21st century.
Through an innovative curriculum that focuses on global historical
analysis and the integration of the most recent information technology
into historical research and teaching, program graduates will acquire
the skills necessary to communicate historical insights in a diverse
and technologically advanced society. Thematic courses, such as
the history of crime, science, women, and sexuality complement the
traditional menu of national and period histories. The flexibility
of the program allows students to tailor a course of study to fit
their specific needs. After completing their course work, students
write a master's thesis to demonstrate their skills in historical
research and analysis.

Master of Arts in Clinical and Counseling Psychology
The Graduate program provides an ethically and cross-culturally sensitive program in clinical and counseling psychology with emphasis on both theoretical and applied perspectives. In addition to our traditional strength in clinical and counseling areas, we are currently in the process of enhancing our offerings and strength in the area of health psychology. Our focus is and will be on understanding, preventing and treating disorders, diseases and dysfunctions that compromise mental and physical health by fostering knowledge and understanding of the biopsychosocial factors that contribute to the onset, progression and consequences of these disorders across the lifespan at both the individual and group level.
Purpose of the Program
The purpose of the program is to prepare students who are knowledgeable in clinical theory, empiricism, assessment and in the application of clinical and research techniques and procedures, and who are ethically, socially, and culturally sensitive and motivated to continue to learn and further the development of their skills and knowledge throughout their professional lives. The program is committed to attracting highly qualified individuals with excellent academic skills and who have clinical, applied or human services experience or demonstrate potential in becoming competent, caring and ethically responsible clinicians, researchers and professionals.
The program will provide the preparation to pursue certification as a Psychometrist (a professional who administers and scores psychological and neuropsychological tests under the supervision of a licensed psychologist or neuropsychologist). The program is suitable for students seeking a terminal Master’s degree and those students who want to pursue Doctoral-level training and would benefit from enhanced clinical and/or research experience.
Internships and Jobs
Graduates and interns have and will serve in a wide variety of inpatient and outpatient settings including hospitals, community mental health clinics, wellness centers, health maintenance facilities, local, regional, national and international health care organizations, group homes, drug treatment facilities, rehabilitation centers, correctional facilities and gerontology programs. Under proper licensed supervision, graduates of our program are able to conduct assessments; provide clinical and health-related services to individuals, groups and families using appropriate diagnostic and intervention techniques; participate in institutional and organizational research projects at the Master’s level and work on an elective basis with a variety of populations (e.g., chronic and acute diseases and disorders, children, adolescents, the elderly, the severely mentally ill, the neurologically impaired, substance abusers, and others). The program highlights demographic changes and issues affecting metropolitan areas, while providing the tools for mapping and measuring trends and for assessing their impact on communities, organizations and programs. As a result, this program provides students with the critical thinking and analytical abilities needed in today’s ever-changing world.
Graduates of this M.A. program will have the training and experience to carry out institutional analysis, evaluation research, report writing, and to conduct social policy evaluations. This program prepares Master's level sociologists for careers in a variety of settings, including business, education, government, health care, international relations, community and other nonprofit organizations.
