The College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the largest of the University's academic units, is the heart of liberal arts education at William Paterson. Its departments offer most of the required and elective General Education courses, and many interdisciplinary and international studies courses that provide students with a well-rounded education. The departments of African, African-American and Caribbean Studies, Anthropology, English, History, Geography and Urban Studies, Languages and Cultures, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Women's Studies and two new interdisciplinary programs, Latin American Studies and Asian Studies, offer undergraduate majors and minors. The College offers excellent graduate programs in Bilingual/English as a Second Language, English, History, Psychology, M.A. in Applied Sociology, and Public Policy and International Affairs MA in Political Science.

Flexible scheduling makes it possible for our students to take classes during the day, evenings, weekends, and on-line.The Department of Languages and Cultures and the Asian Studies Program are launching an Accelerated Teacher Preparation Program for K-12 pre-service and in-service teachers of Chinese Language featuring flexible scheduling and intensive courses.

The College prides itself on the scholarly endeavors of its teacher-scholars and their service to the campus, their profession and the region. Our faculty come from the most prestigious PhD-granting institutions and have national and international reputations. Among them, there are 21 Fulbright fellows. Their expertise and ability to provide the most current training in the disciplines gives our graduates a competitive advantage in the work force and in applying to graduate schools.

The College incorporates technology in instruction and research, and provides students with hands-on experience in discipline-based state-of-the-arts computer facilities. The College boasts computer laboratories in African, African-American and Caribbean Studies, Anthropology, English (the Writing Center), History, Languages, Philosophy (Cognitive Science), Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology.

We cultivate a supportive, student-oriented learning community. The Humanities Honors and Biopsychology Honors programs; Pre-Law Program; the English, History, Political Science, and Sociology honor societies; student clubs; the Philosophy Department's colloquium series, and a variety of internships and opportunities for student research are some of the ways by which we enrich the undergraduate experience.
