Convocation is an annual event that brings together the incoming class, the president, provost, faculty, and various members of the administration, including the Board of Trustees, to recognize the beginning of a new academic year. It is celebrated at most colleges and universities as a means of both welcoming new students to the campus and to higher education, and to challenge students to make the most of the university experience. The 2013 Convocation ceremony features Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, Warren Sandmann; Vice President of Student Development, John Martone; Alumni Executive Council member, Michael Blizzard; University President, Kathleen Waldron; Keynote Speaker and member of the WNBA's New York Liberty professional basketball team, Essence Carson; Student Government Association Executive Vice President, Martin Novak; and music by the William Paterson University All-Star Jamboree.
