Written Language Assessment & Intervention Strategies for School-Age Children with Language Learning Disabilities
Speech-language pathologists supporting school-age children with language learning disabilities (LLD) have a responsibility for understanding the impact of language difficulties on written language. They must also be informed of authentic assessment methods for evaluating writing strengths and challenges as well as strategies for supporting expository writing. This presentation will explain the linguistic characteristics leading to problem writing as well as the impact of deficits in executive function on written language. Assessment methods will be discussed including ways to examine effective note taking and writing for explanation. Intervention strategies will be highlighted including the use of thinking maps and related graphic organizers as well as other self-regulatory strategies that support the expository writing process.
