MAEN Course Descriptions

Mathematics Endorsement Courses

Each of the listed courses uses appropriate technology to allow learners to discover knowledge dynamically and emphasizes the NCTM standards of problem solving as a means as well as a goal. Importance is placed on communication of ideas in various means, interrelatedness of math applications as well as the special NCTM standards for a particular content.

  • Students seeking high school endorsement must complete a total of 30 credits.
  • Students seeking middle school endorsement also have the option of taking ELCL6070, ELCL6140, and ELCL6150 and must complete a total of 15 credits.
  • Middle School endorsement requires a course in Adolescent Psychology or a course with content that covers this age range.

MAEN 5000 - Algebra in Middle School Mathematics

This course provides an introduction to the basic concepts of algebra using real life and real data applications. Topics include: real number system, solving algebraic equations and inequalities, polynomials, exponents, radicals, rational expressions. Prerequisite: NONE

MAEN 5010 - Math modeling in Middle School Mathematics

This course is a continuation of MAEN 5000. MAEN 5010 deepens and extends the student’s understanding of algebraic concepts. The course is based largely on the use of graphing calculators to model real world situations. Topics include: Linear, Quadratic, Exponential, Logarithmic, and  Polynomial, Functions and Models. Prerequisite: MAEN 5000

MAEN 5020 - Basic Algebra and Applications

This course provides a solid foundation in algebra. Applications are considered which deepen the student's understanding of the concepts, while graphing calculators are used to visually illustrate algebraic formulations.
Prerequisite: MAEN 5010

MAEN 5030 - Problem Solving in Mathematics

This course covers the theory of problem solving as it applies to different areas in mathematics, such as: sets, numerations systems, number theory, counting techniques, probability, statistics, network theory, and algebra. In addition, each week, interactive activities using the Internet will be explored to understand how the Internet can be incorporated within the mathematics classroom.
Prerequisite: MAEN 5000 and MAEN 5010

MAEN 5040 - Geometry and Applications

A review of the fundamental concepts of Euclidean geometry with applications and an introduction to Non-Euclidean geometry. Topics include congruence, similarity, constructions, transformations, consistency of axiomatic systems and modern applications. Presents axioms for Euclidean geometry as compared to axioms for several modern geometries. Appropriate computer software such as Geometer's Sketchpad will be used for exploration and investigation throughout the course
Prerequisite: MAEN 5000

MAEN 5050 - Probability and Statistics with Applications
This course introduces probability and statistical concepts with applications to various disciplines using technological   tools such as the TI 83+ graphing calculator and excel. Topics include descriptive    statistics such as measures of central tendency, variation, and positions; probability, conditional probability and probability distributions; inferential statistics include, estimation, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, chi-square test and regression and correlation
Prerequisite: MAEN 5020

MAEN 5060 - Elementary Function Theory
This course presents an introduction to the theory of algebraic, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions with graphical analysis and applications. A graphing calculator is used throughout the course to explore the relationships between functions. Other technology used will be a computer algebra system with related Internet plug-ins so that interactive web learning working with functions can be explored.
Prerequisite: MAEN 5020

MAEN 5070 - Calculus with Applications
Designed for the student who wishes to investigate the concepts and techniques of elementary calculus. Topics include real numbers systems, functions of one variable, limits and continuity, differentiation, anti differentiation, integration and applications.
Prerequisite: MAEN 5060

MAEN 5080 - Logo in Mathematics
The course presents mathematical concepts that are suitable for exploration and extension through the use of the computer language; Logo. Topics covered range from mathematical patterning in geometry and number systems, to isometries and Fractals. The theory of programming in a procedural language is taught as it relates to the development of problem solving skills within the mathematics classroom.
Prerequisite: MAEN 5020

MAEN 5090 - Mathematical Modeling
This course emphasizes the role of mathematical modeling as a tool for learning and appreciating mathematical techniques. Applications are drawn from diverse areas such as discrete dynamical systems, mathematics of social choice, graphs and networks, linear programming, transportation and assignment problems, etc. Importance is placed on the role of modeling as a facet of problem solving and on the transformation of the curriculum through the use of computers to solve large sized problems. Extensive use of computer software is made throughout the course.
Prerequisite: MAEN 5010, MAEN 5020 and MAEN 5070
