The Center for Research (CfR) was established in 1992 with the purpose of facilitating and encouraging faculty and student research in the College of Science and Health that will culminate in publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at research conferences, and/or application for external funding.

The main support mechanism provided by the CfR is a summer competitive research-funding program. The CfR awards summer stipends for faculty, as well as financial support for student assistants, supplies, and travel. A smaller amount of money is available on a limited basis to support faculty who were not funded, but who show promise in their research efforts. An outside panel of experts, prepared in academic specialties similar to the applicants, reviews submitted research proposals and makes recommendations for funding that are forwarded to the Dean for final approval.

As an example of this scale of funding, in the summer of 2006, the CfR provided funds for 15 summer faculty stipends (including funding for 11 student assistants).

For more information on the summer award programs, see Faculty Guidelines.

The CfR provides other means of support for researchers in the College of Science and Health. These services, which are available to all faculty in the College of Science and Health, include:

  • Statistical consultation on an as-needed basis. Call or e-mail the CfR for more information.
  • "Mini-grants" for small research-related costs (up to $600.00 per year per faculty member) including publication and reprint charges.
  • Preprint publication in the form of CfR Technical Reports
  • Workshops on topics such as proposal writing, external funding opportunities, and statistical design.
