Welcome to the Department of Public Health The Department of Public Health embraces the mission of William Paterson University striving for lifelong learning, excellence, diversity and community. The Department is committed to health promotion and disease prevention preparing students with the health knowledge and skills needed for careers in public health education and a variety of other health related industries and agencies; providing a foundation for students in other disciplines whose practice requires health knowledge and health education principles and skills; and promoting positive health behaviors for all students through participation in the general education curriculum. The Department of Public Health at William Paterson University was founded in 1973. Originally the Department of Health Sciences, the name was changed to Community Health in 1991, and most recently (2008) to the Department of Public Health to better reflect our mission. Degree programs in Public Health - the Department of Public Health at William Paterson University offers two undergraduate degree programs:
In addition, the Department of Public Health offers a minor/concentration in nutrition, provides the health courses required for teacher certification in health and physical education, and jointly offers a school nurse certification program with the Department of Nursing. Careers in public health - Opportunities to work in the field of public health have never been better. With growing interest in preventative medicine, an aging population, new and innovative behavioral research, and the increasingly complex issues of affordable health-care, career options in public health are numerous.
