Transfer Policy
Overview
Most colleges and universities make provisions for a specified number of credits to be accepted from other recognized schools; however, the constraints placed upon these credits are regulated by the Areceiving@ institutions.
Credits not to exceed 6 semester hours of graduate course work taken at other fully accredited institutions will be considered to replace required courses. The credits must have been taken in a graduate program, for credit, within the six-year time limit for completing the master's degree. The Chairperson or Graduate Program Director must agree that the specific credits are appropriate and acceptable; a grade of B or better must have been earned in such courses. (Transfer course credits are not included in the cumulative GPA).
Credits may be applied toward the masters degree provided that:
- The student applies for transfer credit at the time of matriculation.
- The work was taken in graduate courses for graduate credit.
- The work was taken within the last six years.
- The grade received was B or better.
- The work does not duplicate any work, graduate or undergraduate, for which credit was previously given.
- The work has not been applied toward an academic degree at any other institution.
- The work has been taken at an accredited college or university.
- The work is applicable to the student's program.
Procedure
A Request for approval of transfer credit is submitted by the student in writing to the Graduate Program Director, who will process the official Transfer Information Form.
A copy of the finalized approval form will be placed in the student's record.
Transferred courses accepted for credit will appear on the student's transcript.
Approval of A Substitution For A Required Graduate Course
A student may request a course taken at another accredited institution outside the William Paterson University graduate program in nursing be used as a substitution for a required course. The course must meet all the following requirements before it can be submitted for approval to the Graduate Program Director. The course must have been taken no more than six years before admission to the graduate program in nursing. The transcript must show a grade of A or B in the course; it must be a graduate-level course; and it must be approved by the faculty teaching the required course at William Paterson University.
A course description and an official transcript are required and should be attached to this petition before it is submitted.
